So, we discussed the economic logic of the creation and operation of firms. Let's now try to look at this process from a closer distance - from the point of view of an entrepreneur creating a company. In order for this analysis to be initially accurate, we will give a definition of an entrepreneur.

What kind of people most often become entrepreneurs? Research shows that most often this path in life is chosen by people with the following characteristics:

  • the desire to determine your own life;
  • moderate risk appetite;
  • confidence in one's ability to succeed;
  • the desire to immediately see the result of your efforts;
  • energy;
  • future orientation;
  • ability to organize the work of other people;
  • the tendency to measure success in terms of money.

It must be said that there are many myths around entrepreneurship, for example:

  1. Only those entrepreneurs who find a unique idea are lucky.
  2. Entrepreneurship is not difficult.
  3. Entrepreneurship is a risky game.
  4. Entrepreneurship occurs only in small businesses.

All these myths are absolutely false. Many successful companies were created and live due to the fact that the entrepreneurs who organized them simply found a slightly different way of doing the same thing as others. At the same time, entrepreneurship is a rather complex activity, since the organizer of a company has to solve a lot of very diverse problems both in the field of marketing and in the field of management (we will talk about this a little later). But it’s also impossible to say that this is just a risky game - “even or odd, lucky or unlucky.” A lot depends on the managerial qualifications of the entrepreneur, his ability to avoid fairly standard mistakes - those that kill most young companies. Finally, entrepreneurship is not limited to small businesses. Let's say, one of the richest people in Great Britain - Sir Richard Branson, owner of Virgin Airlines and many others with the common word "Virgin" in their names - created a huge business empire, acting all his life as a typical entrepreneur.

The vast global experience of entrepreneurship allows us to assert that this is not only not a game, but a complex area of ​​​​professional activity. Failure to understand this is the cause of the 9 fatal mistakes that most often destroy young companies:

  1. incompetence in management;
  2. lack of experience;
  3. poor financial management;
  4. inability to develop a strategic development plan;
  5. uncontrolled growth of the company;
  6. unsuccessful placement of the company;
  7. poor control over inventories of resources and finished products;
  8. unqualified price setting;
  9. inability to move from the stage of entrepreneurship to the stage of regular management, when the founder of the company transfers the current management of the business to hired managers.

The seriousness of these mistakes is evidenced by the fact that, according to American statistics, 24% of newly created companies cease to exist within the first two years from the moment of creation, 51% of new companies close in the first 4 years, and 63% are unable to survive until their seventh anniversary from the moment of creation. In order to avoid such developments, an entrepreneur must:

  • know the essence of your business down to the smallest detail;
  • develop a well-thought-out business plan;
  • skillfully manage financial resources;
  • have the skills to analyze the financial statements of your company;
  • learn how to effectively manage company personnel.

But even if an entrepreneur is smart enough to avoid all these mistakes, and his business is developing successfully, his work still cannot be called easy. The fact is that almost any entrepreneur faces instability of income, the risk of losing the entire business, long working hours and high intensity of work, low income until the business becomes large enough, the nervous nature of the work, full responsibility for all the affairs of the company .

It is obvious that the main (although not the only) goal of the owners and managers of the company is to ensure the successful development of its business and personal enrichment on this basis. But how to achieve this? An analysis of business practice shows that the success of this type of effort is determined by two factors (Figure 10-7):

  1. growth in sales and assets;
  2. state support.

Let us note right away that the real success of a company is associated with the growth of only those sales that are profitable, and with a level of profitability not lower than a certain (for a given company) minimum. And similarly, asset growth is effective only if it allows (directly or indirectly) to increase the production of just such profitable products.

This distinction is, of course, very conditional, since without effective management, effective investments, that is, investing money in business development, are unthinkable. As for the concept of “effective management”, this is management that allows for the use of funds invested in the development of the company to fulfill two interrelated conditions (Fig. 10-9):

  1. increasing the competitiveness of the company's products;
  2. increasing the market value of the company.

Both of the above-mentioned conditions are extremely important for Russian companies today, but are not always recognized by their managers and, even more so, are rarely embodied in their real action programs. And this is the reason why so many Russian companies (especially in industry) are going through hard times today, as they are being squeezed out of the domestic market by foreign competitors who have better mastered the rules of creating a competitive and therefore successful business.

Accordingly, the understanding that increasing competitiveness is not so much the result of the struggle for restrictive duties on the import of imported goods, but rather a consequence of the choice and implementation of a well-thought-out marketing strategy (Fig. 10- 10).

As shown in Fig. 10-10, developing such a strategy requires firm managers to regularly analyze four main elements:

  1. the company's position in the market, i.e. how its products are perceived by potential buyers, what level of technical excellence, quality and reliability they expect in this case;
  2. market demands, i.e., what needs are presented by consumers in the market today or what needs can be tried to be satisfied tomorrow;
  3. cost reduction opportunities, i.e., whether our company can reduce the production costs of its goods faster and to a greater extent than competitors, creating opportunities for itself to sell these goods at a lower price;
  4. opportunities to create differentiated products, i.e., whether our company can create modifications of its products that are different in properties from what competitors do, and therefore more attractive to consumers even at the same or higher price than competitors.

This kind of analysis is the elementary basis of any marketing activity. And we have to remind you of this only because managers of many Russian enterprises still allow themselves to neglect the search for answers to these questions. But this leads them to often develop extremely unsuccessful marketing strategies, and, accordingly, to making equally senseless pricing decisions and - in the worst cases - becomes the cause of the death of enterprises.

In order for a new business to have a chance of success, an entrepreneur needs to find the right answers to the following questions:

  • What specific products or services should be offered to customers to attract their attention?
  • How should we organize the production of goods or the provision of services in order to achieve the quality or those costs (and sales prices) at which buyers will want to buy from us?
  • How should you advertise your products or services so that customers notice them and want to buy them?
  • Where will the money come from to pay all the costs of creating a company and organizing the production of the first batches of goods?

An entrepreneur must look for the answer to the first three questions in the following areas:

  1. production management;
  2. marketing;
  3. financial management (Fig. 10-11);
  4. accounting;
  5. information technologies.

Production management refers to the solution of questions about how many and what kind of workers and other production resources a company should use to create and organize sales of its goods and how to do this with minimal costs and the required quality.

Such a decision is usually made on the basis of management principles, which, according to one of the founders of management, Henri Fayol, include:

  1. division of labor. This is a natural phenomenon. Its goal is to increase the quantity and quality of production while expending the same effort. This is achieved by reducing the number of goals to which attention and action must be directed. Moreover, the division of labor applies not only to technical work. Its result is specialization of functions and division of power;
  2. power (authority) and responsibility. Authority is the right to give an order, and responsibility is the sanctions - rewards or punishments - that accompany its actions. Where there is authority, there is responsibility;
  3. discipline. It is essentially obedience, diligence, activity, demeanor, movement. Discipline involves the implementation and respect of agreements reached between the organization and its employees;
  4. unity of command, or unity of command. An employee can only be given two orders regarding any action by one supervisor;
  5. unity of leadership and direction. One manager and one program for a set of operations pursuing the same goal. Each group acting within the framework of one goal must be united by a single plan and have one leader;
  6. subordination of private, personal interests to general ones. The interests of one employee or group of employees should not prevail over the interests of a larger organization, including the interests of the state as a whole;
  7. staff remuneration - payment for work performed. It must be fair and, as far as possible, satisfy both the staff and the organization, both the employer and the employee;
  8. centralization. Like the division of labor, centralization is a natural phenomenon. However, the appropriate degree of centralization varies depending on the specific conditions and is resolved by finding the measure that gives the best overall performance;
  9. hierarchy, or scalar chain. This is a series of leadership positions, from the highest to the lowest. It is a mistake to avoid hierarchy unnecessarily, but a much greater mistake is to maintain it when it may be detrimental to the organization;
  10. order. The formula of material order is a definite place for every thing in its place, the formula of social order is a definite place for each person in its place. Graphic tables and diagrams greatly facilitate the establishment and control of both social and material order;
  11. justice is the result of a combination of benevolence and justice;
  12. constancy of personnel composition. High staff turnover is both a cause and a consequence of poor performance. A mediocre manager who values ​​his job is certainly preferable to an outstanding, talented manager who quickly leaves and does not hold on to his job;
  13. initiative - developing a plan and its successful implementation. Freedom of proposal and implementation also falls under the category of initiative;
  14. Staff unity, or esprit de corps, is a great strength in an organization.

But in modern markets, good management alone cannot ensure the success of a company. This requires mastery of marketing methods.

The main idea of ​​marketing is that one should not sell what has been produced, but produce only what can be sold at a good profit.

Usually, when talking about marketing, this means the company’s activities related to:

  1. research of the market in which you intend to sell your goods or services;
  2. advertising of goods or services;
  3. promoting products using various methods of attracting customer attention;
  4. competent setting of prices for goods or services;
  5. choosing the range of goods or services that will be offered to customers;
  6. determining who, where and how should sell the company's products;
  7. organization of service.

Accordingly, it is customary to talk about four key elements of marketing - the so-called “four Ps”: product, price, promotion, place.

In reality, marketing is a set of methods, the use of which helps the owners of the company more accurately understand what they should do in order to earn a profit and maintain this opportunity for many years. The importance of these methods for ensuring competitiveness is so great that firms spend more and more money on it every year. For example, in the United States, more than $300 billion is spent annually on marketing consumer goods alone.

When it is clear with what and how the company will go to the market and how its production activities will be organized, it is time to think about where and under what conditions the company can receive funds for its development and how to manage these funds so that they are always enough for normal business operations . The range of these issues relates to financial management.

At the same time, the main allies of financiers are always accountants, i.e. specialists who know how to organize the prompt receipt and analysis of information about the financial results of the company. Without such information, company managers cannot correctly assess how well their business is going and whether there are any problems in it that threaten insolvency and even bankruptcy in the future.

Today, another important area has appeared in company management technology - information technology. Specialists in this field are engaged in the creation of technical and software systems that allow them to quickly receive and process information about all aspects of the company’s work. In today’s rapidly changing world, neither an accountant, nor financiers, nor marketers, nor company managers can do without this.

A thoughtful and competent solution to problems related to management, marketing, accounting and information technology determines the economic result of the company’s activities (Fig. 10-12).

And if an entrepreneur started his own business, already having some experience in business, even someone else’s, and most importantly, understanding how to look for the right solutions in the field of management, marketing and finance, then he can create a successful business even without particularly original ideas.

Let's return to the four key questions that face an entrepreneur who decides to organize a new business. The last of these, but the second most important question: where to get the funds to create and then expand a business?

Typically, the basis for opening many small businesses is the personal savings of their owners. Where to get money for development?

As can be seen from Fig. 10-13, there are many sources of such funds. Many entrepreneurs do not resort to external sources of financing and make do only with internal funds, drawing money from reserve funds (which they created at the beginning of the business in case of unforeseen difficulties), retained earnings and depreciation.

But often these internal sources are not enough. And then businessmen begin to look for opportunities to raise funds from external sources. This can be a credit bank (short-term - for a period of up to a year or long-term - with a repayment period of several years), the sale of rights to the capital of your company in the form of securities (shares), accounts payable, i.e. batches of production resources received from suppliers , but not yet paid.

Of course, business can make an entrepreneur rich, but it can also deprive everyone of their hard-earned money. To reduce the risk of ruin, it is useful to try to plan it before starting real activities. To do this, a novice entrepreneur should prepare a business plan in which he must clearly describe for himself and for those from whom he will ask for money to develop his business:

  1. what product or services it will offer to the market;
  2. what kind of buyers he hopes to attract and with what;
  3. how he hopes to beat his competitors;
  4. what is needed to organize a business.

In order to prepare a useful and realistic business plan, it is useful for an aspiring entrepreneur to do the following:

  1. assess the conditions for business development, which involves determining the favorableness of the general economic situation for starting a business and the state of affairs in the market where you plan to enter;
  2. develop a management plan that should define the organizational structure of the new company (what divisions it will have, what each division will be responsible for, who will report to whom), production methods and the necessary equipment or retail space and, finally, the number of employees and their qualifications and payment methods;
  3. draw up a marketing plan in which it is necessary to determine which markets or customer groups the company’s activities will be aimed at, how the product should differ from competitors’ products so that buyers pay attention to it, at what price this product will be sold, where and how sales will be organized and finally, how all this will be advertised;
  4. prepare calculations and make a financial business plan based on them, which will estimate how much money is needed to start a business, when this money will be needed, from whom and under what conditions you can try to get this money, and how profitable it will be to invest money in a new business.

Now we can formulate another recipe for economic prudence.

For the successful development of the country's economy, it is necessary to protect competition and prevent attempts by individual firms to monopolize the market in order to impose inflated prices on customers.

We have already talked about this on our website. Let's move on - how to run a business that has just been opened? The answer to the question “how to run a business?” hardly exists. Or rather, it exists, but it will either be a very superficial answer, or in an ambiguous form that is not applicable in different areas of business. You need to understand how to run a business correctly by actually running your business, based on your experience, and not decide on the basis of some truths and rules. Although strategic definitions and adherence to certain general business principles are, of course, necessary.

In this text we will try to answer this pressing question: how to run a business correctly? I’ll explain right away, maybe someone won’t want to read further: I’ll write about what I think is correct in running your own business from the point of view of what you should pay more attention to and what you should pay less attention to, and I’ll also give some business axioms.

The most important thing in running a small business So, what is the most important thing in a small business? But what does small or considerable have to do with any business (it seems to me so, I haven’t been involved in a large business yet, I don’t know :-)).

1.1 Clients (and working with them) The most important thing in business is customers! Clients, friends, clients! Not employees (although they are very important), not competent business organization (although it is difficult without it), and not even your own efficiency (although this is everything if you are an entrepreneur). And the clients!

Without customers, your business will definitely not be able to survive.. Without everything else, it will be hard, but there are chances. Without clients, there is no chance for business. This, of course, is understandable in itself, but, nevertheless, I considered it necessary to emphasize.

So, if right now I had to say how to run a business correctly, I would say - so that there are more clients :-). Clearly this is not the answer. The point is to make this your main activity. In numbers, we can say this: as a business owner, you should spend 50% of your time working with clients. And for everything else - the remaining 50% of the time. Keep this in mind when writing your business plan.

There are two nuances here. Firstly, this does not mean that you personally have to do it. Of course, you will delegate some tasks to employees or give them to freelancers (this is more efficient because). But you will plan, set directions, formulate tasks - and let most of them relate to working with clients. Secondly, it was no coincidence that I said not searching for clients, but working with clients. Because customers are not only about attracting new ones, but also (or even more important) about retaining existing ones. Because winning back lost customers is much more difficult than retaining them.

It is very important to work competently and correctly with employees, partners and suppliers, and with yourself. But working with clients is above all. I say it again to all my clients. You need to constantly come up with and try new (or old, if they work) means of attracting new customers while simultaneously looking for ways to retain existing ones.

Sales So, your “another most important task” in running a business is sales. Surprised? Yes, no, of course, right? Otherwise, you would do something else :-).

So, sales, sales, sales. You have clients, but if you don’t sell to them, then they are not clients, but, let’s say, acquaintances. Really, right? Therefore, turning to the numbers again, let’s say this: of the remaining 50% of the time (50% you spent with clients), 40% is spent on building distribution and sales channels. Again, it’s better not to do it yourself (although this is not prohibited by law yet :-)), but by creating the conditions and principles of doing business with an emphasis on these two main components.

Customers and sales are your main task. Everything else is 10%. At the same time, we must take all other issues quite seriously, of course. Business does not tolerate relaxation. But priorities are priorities. When you have a lot of clients and when you sell to them a lot, it will be easy to solve all other problems, agree. But at least it’s easier than if there were no sales and no clients.

How to run a business There are two main points in managing your business: the first is planning, organizing and controlling work, the second is financial management and accounting. Both are determinative and absolutely interdependent. In practice, this means that you cannot do one well unless you have paid enough attention to the other. We will look into how this looks in real business in this block.

How to manage and how to work with clients Managing customer relationships is a big and challenging task. And in order to work with clients correctly, you will have to build the entire client journey and go through several stages. How and which ones exactly, we will analyze in this article.

How to manage employees The work of employees in almost any business plays a decisive role. Therefore, it is so important to properly organize work in the company. To do this you need to: competently organize work and interactions; manage and lead people correctly; motivate. It seems small and simple, but it’s not :-) Let’s look at what exactly needs to be done within each of these tasks.

Risks in small business and how to manage them The ability to manage risk in business is a very important skill. But not all aspiring entrepreneurs view risk management as a necessary part of business planning. However, this is nothing more than an everyday activity. Therefore, be sure to study what the most important points are in the risk management process in business.

  • Goal – objectives – plan. It really works, believe me. Set a goal for yourself, break it down into separate tasks and smaller goals, write down a plan for their implementation - and do it. To move forward, you definitely need a reference point - so that you can always see where you are now. This will add motivation to you.
  • Enterprise. You should work on your business, not in it. You are an entrepreneur, not an employee (even in your own company). You have to plan, define strategies, organize a business, lead your team. I understand that when starting your own business you often have to do a lot personally, but, nevertheless, you should definitely strive for this.
  • Saving. You don't need a fancy office or a cool chair. No receptionists or secretaries needed. Keep your business humble. At least at first. If you have additional funds, then you already know where to invest them: clients and sales, remember?
  • Distance. Don't be "friends" with your employees. This is bad. You can be fair, generous, honest - but not friends. At least stay on “You”. An even worse option is to hire friends as employees.
  • Strategy. Always know where you are going. Determine the main direction for yourself and follow your line. Remember, your employees should also be aware of what the company is striving for. This makes your business more sustainable.
  • Responsibility. If you are not ready to truly take responsibility, and are always looking for who is to blame, without realizing that this is YOUR risk, then do not do business at all.
  • Business is profit. If your business is unprofitable, close it. Dot.
  • Save all documents, checks, and other pieces of paper. At least make a photocopy. You never know when you might need it. Our country is like this :-).
