Sometimes you have to connect 3.5″ external hard drives or DVD-ROMs to different computers. This does not have to be done very often, but in several different places, geographically distant (relatively) from each other. And if I still carry the cord of a USB-SATA converter with me, it’s easier to buy power supplies and put them in those places where they may be needed, next to the used DVDs and HDDs. The blocks described below were purchased for these purposes.

From the description on the website:

    size: 11.7 x 3.2cm x 4.3cm

    cable length: 42cm

input voltage range: ac 100v-240v 50-60Hz

output voltage: dc 12v and 5v

    weight: approximately 120g

The currents are indicated as 2A for 5 and 12 V. I didn’t really hope for 2A, I deliberately bought some of the cheapest samples. I’m not going to load them with high currents, and at a low price, it wouldn’t be such a shame if they were stolen or burned by colleagues. Photo from the seller's website:

In reality, the buildings turned out to be somewhat different. I won't say better or worse. Cases are like cases.

Molex connectors are missing one of the ground pins. On one of the power supplies, the 12 V contact somehow sits suspiciously deep... but there seems to be a contact.

First of all, I look at the output voltages under load on the most power-hungry hard drive I have - the SCSI server Seagate Barracuda ST15150N. It consumes more than 1A for each voltage and if it starts you can hear it!!! I especially keep it for testing power supplies during repairs.

The voltages are normal, but if you look at it with an oscilloscope... I can’t vouch for the accuracy of the measurements, the oscilloscope belongs to the office and is already pretty worn out. Set to 10mV per division.

This is 5 volts.

And this is 12 volts (under load).

I don’t like pulsations, I’ll try to see how I can improve the parameters of the blocks without much investment...

It often happens that some parts (especially the inductor) are provided on the boards, but not installed by the economical Chinese, by installing which you can significantly improve the output parameters.

We open the power supply, everything is sadder with it. It is assembled according to the standard circuit of a flyback switching power supply. Everything is simplified to the point of disgrace. The 22μFx400V capacitor is a bit small, but oh well.

The primary circuits do not even have a filter (at least there is a fuse). There are no chokes in the secondary circuits (and there is not even space for them), and small capacitors. There is a 16-volt capacitor in the 12 V circuit. In my opinion, this is not enough.

The soldering is very mediocre, although everything works, in some places you have to solder it to be safe. The ground contact is hanging in the air...

There are places on the board for soldering wires, but everything is soldered from below, directly to the board traces.

There is space for installing two Schottky diodes in parallel.

Yes, the power supplies correspond to the price. It’s unlikely that they will be significantly improved, but I’ll try to do everything I can.

I use places to install parallel diodes to place the inductor.

To do this, I trim the tracks on the board and resolder the output wires.

Then I replace the capacitors. I use what I have at hand, Low ESR 105 0 and for higher voltages, I shunt them with ceramics.

Probably, something else could be done, but I don’t see much point.

I assemble everything into the case and connect the load.

Now it's 5 volts.

And so on 12 volts.

The pulsations became much less, which is what I wanted.

Conclusion: in their original state, such power supplies are not recommended for use and are even dangerous for connected devices...

After modification it didn't become much better, but still better. But considering the cost of such power supplies, after a little modification, and being aware of the risk, they can be used, especially if they will have to be used periodically and their long-term operation in 7x24 mode is not planned.

I didn’t draw the diagram, I found a very similar one on the Internet.

I bought a USB to SATA adapter on ebay - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=111210536778&ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:US:3160, and a separate power supply for it - it turns out cheaper than set.

I didn’t test all of this together, I checked only the power supply with a tester - it works, and took it apart to avoid surprises. Here is a photo:

I want to say right away that the power supply comes with such devices, but people complain that they burn and take the hard drive with them to VALHALLA. This power supply is designed for 5 and 12 volts, I checked it and it is. The build quality is a C grade, and as always you need to finish it by applying thermal paste to the radiator, it’s already there in the photo. I haven’t checked how it works with the disk, when I check it I’ll write a report about adapter (I’d like to say right away about its disadvantages - there is only SATA and no power connector for the drive, so a separate power supply is needed, there are more expensive square adapters - without these disadvantages, when using SATA drives - you don’t need a separate power supply.) and power supply. Seller, if you believe the reviews, he sells thousands of these, which is why he chose it (He has similar ones with a wave-like pattern on the body, but they are cheaper, so the quality is probably worse). I have a lot of power cords, but I had to make the SATA-MOLEX adapter myself - I saved 30 rubles. Yes, I’ll write why I bought it - I have a lot of old screws, but I don’t have a portable hard drive, and this gadget solves this problem.
