The effect of an old photo: how to make vintage photos, choosing a program for working with photos, necessary photo editors, filters for processing. Technology of applying plaster with an antique effect Photo editor old film

Vintage photographs with retro effects are in fashion now. Such photographs take place both in private photo collections, exhibitions, and in user profiles on social networks. Moreover, to create them it is by no means necessary to use old cameras: it is enough just to properly process the photo on a computer.

You can give your photo an antique effect using one of the desktop graphic editors: Adobe Photoshop, Gimp, Lightroom, etc. Another option, faster and simpler, is to apply appropriate filters and effects directly in your browser.

Of course, as a separate program, a web browser is unlikely to help you with photo processing. However, if you have access to the network, all sorts of online services come to your aid, allowing you to take the photo to the look that you like. This also includes “aging” images, which will be discussed in detail in this article.

Method 1: Pixlr-o-matic

A simple and convenient web service for instantly applying artistic effects in vintage and retro style to photography. Pixlr-o-matic is designed as a virtual darkroom, where you go through several stages of image processing.

The resource is based on technology Adobe Flash, so you will need the appropriate software to use it.

  1. To use this web application, you do not need to create account Online. You can immediately upload a photo and start processing it.

    Yes, click on the button "Computer" and import the desired photo into the service. Or click "Webcam" to take a new photo using your webcam, if you have one.

  2. After uploading the photo, below the preview area you will see a filter ribbon. To apply any of the effects, simply left-click on it. Well, to scroll through the feed, just drag it in the desired direction.

  3. By default, you can only choose from Lomo filters, but to add retro effects to the list, use the film icon in the bottom toolbar.

    In the menu that opens, select a section "Effects".

    Check the desired filters and click "OK". You will find them at the end of the virtual feed.

  4. At the bottom there is a board with colored sectors. Use this to switch between filters, overlay effects, and frames. Both of the latter categories can also be expanded using the additional items menu described above.

  5. You can proceed to saving the finished photo to your computer using the button "Save".

  6. Click on the icon "Computer".

    Then, if desired, give the photo a title and click on the double arrow to complete the export procedure.

As you can see, Pixlr-o-matic is a seemingly simple and even funny web application, but nevertheless, the output gives a very interesting result.

Method 2: Aviary

This web service from Adobe allows you to give any photo an antique effect in a few clicks. In addition, Aviary is a flexible and functional photo editor with a wide range of features. The resource works based on HTML5 technology and therefore behaves perfectly in any browser without any additional software.

  1. So, follow the link above and click on the button "Edit Your Photo".
  2. Upload a photo to the service by clicking on the cloud icon, or simply drag the photo to the appropriate area.

  3. Then on the editor page in the toolbar at the top, go to the section "Effects".

  4. To apply a filter to a photo, simply select the one you want and click on it.

How to create a film-like effect on a photo so that the picture looks like it was taken on the threshold of the “zero”? We've rounded up the best apps for you that will help you quickly and effortlessly fill your footage with 90s vibes.

Photo processing for film

There are many misconceptions about what the effect under film should be. It is usually attributed to a green tint in the shadows, terrible overexposure, fading and lack of contrast, and increased graininess. In fact, all this can be called , but film photographs look completely different.

The film itself is different, and the resulting shades in the photographs will depend on the conditions in which they were taken. But we can still highlight a few general rules:

  1. Pure color.
  2. Correct white balance.
  3. Special contrast.
  4. No flashy shades.
  5. Harmony of color and contrast.

RNL Films

Palaroid photography is a trend that is currently at the peak of its popularity. The RNL Films application will help you create a film-like effect. You can download it for free in the AppStore or Google Play.

The program itself has 5 folders, each of which has many filters that simulate different films. It is important to know that some filters are absolutely free, while others are paid. The entire pack can be purchased for 299 rubles (price for 2018).

In addition to filters, RNL Films has many standard settings. You can edit the brightness, contrast, add a little noise or dust.

HUJI

The developers of the HUJI application have created such a policy that you cannot control or change anything in the program, thereby simulating the use of a real camera from the 90s. Whatever frame you take, whatever random effect will be applied to the frame, that’s the picture you’ll get.

HUJI is more dominated by blue, orange and other contrasting, intense shades.

The program is free and can be downloaded from official stores. But in the free version it is possible to apply a filter and date only to instant photos. If you want to process a finished photo, you will need to go to Settings and buy full version applications for 75 rubles (price for 2018).

Calla

The next application is called Calla and in its characteristics it is a little similar to HUJI. It can be downloaded from official stores and used absolutely free. The program allows you to apply effects and dates to previously taken photographs.

Photos from the Gallery can be added by clicking on the “+” icon in the lower left corner. The program will automatically process them. To save a photo, you need to tap on it and hold it lightly, then a loading arrow will appear.

Dalgona

We would like to note right away that the Dalgona application is paid and costs 75 rubles (price for 2018). The program is quite simple and has several film filters with which you can achieve a Palaroid-like photo effect. Unfortunately, you can't even adjust the intensity in this app. Buy it or not: it's up to you.

Kamon

Another application that creates the effect of an old film on an iPhone or Android is called Kamon. You can find it in official stores. The program has a rather bright contrast, but maybe this is what someone will like.

To process ready-made photos, the application needs to be updated for money to the PRO version.

Kudak Pro

The Kudak Pro program completely simulates a film camera. Initially you are given only 24 frames. After you take your pictures, your film goes to development. After a day, your photos will be ready. If you don't like the result, you can send the film for development again.

Lomograph

IN cool app Lomograph has only 5 filters, but they all create a wonderful effect under film. The program is absolutely free and easy to use. Experiment with your photos as much as you like!

Cassette effect

Applications with various “cassette effects” are quite similar to each other. Therefore, we decided to combine them into one list:

  1. InShot (Glitch, RGB, Noise effects);
  2. Afterlight (tap on the square with stripes);

Palaroid effect in the photo

A photo like a Palaroid with a characteristic white frame can be taken in several ways.

Method 1

Everything is very simple here. You need to download the Pixl-o-matic program. Next, in the lower menu, tap on the frame icon and select the desired Palaroid mask. All that remains is to save the photo to the Gallery. There are also various highlights with abrasions for every taste.

Method 2

The second method is a little energy-intensive, but also easy.

How to make a Palaroid effect on a photo:

  1. In the search, type in “palaroid frame” or “palaroid frame”.
  2. Find the desired frame and save it.
  3. Already processed photo crop to the right size(most often square).
  4. Go to PicsArt and open a photo with a frame.
  5. Then click “Add Photo” and select the processed photo.
  6. Place the photo in the frame. For convenience, you can reduce the transparency a little. Once the photo is straight, transparency can be restored.
  7. Photo is ready! All that remains is to save it to the Gallery.

Old film effect on video

How to make the effect of an old film on video? Several applications will come to the rescue that will do their job perfectly. Let's get to know them in more detail.

8mm Vintage

How to shoot video with a retro effect? The 8mm Vintage app has several filters that are stylized to look like old film. And it all looks incredibly stylish and cool. The program costs 149 rubles (2018 price), but if you are interested in a similar topic, you can purchase the application.

Indeed, in addition to filters, you can choose the frames that the video will have, as well as apply a vignette or an elegant orange highlight. There is also a flickering effect that imitates low-quality film from the 90s. Such techniques will make even a boring picture much more interesting.

VHS Camera and VHS Camcorder

Using the VHS Camera and VHS Camcorder apps, you can create an old film effect and shoot videos with several different filters in 4:3 format. And also upload your videos and style them as a film from the 90s. The programs can be downloaded absolutely free of charge from official stores.

If you tap on the screen in VHS Camera while shooting, original colored interference will appear on the video.

Recently, antique photographs have come into fashion. In this lesson we will walk through one of the ways to create such an effect step by step.

I'm using a photograph of two swans taken by a photographer at Eleven Studio.

1. First we need to make a noise effect. To do this, we will create a new layer by clicking on the “Create New Layer” panel. Next we need to reset the color settings. To do this, we go to our layer and press the D key.

2. Now we need to apply the “Clouds” filter. It is located in the tab: Filter - Rendering - Clouds (Filter>Render>Clouds)

You should get this effect:

We set the Gaussian distribution, the effect is 20%. The effect should be like this:

Set the blending mode for the “Soft Light” layer. It turned out like this:

4. Now we need to create the effect of an old photo card that has faded a little in the sun. To do this, create a new layer, move it to the top and select a color for it: e6e1cc. For this layer, change the blending mode to “Color” and get this effect:

6. Next we create the scratch effect. Create a new layer. Press D. Then go to the “Filters” tab and add the “Clouds” filter. Then go again to the filter tab and select Rendering - Fibers, select parameters 17 and 15.

Set the blending options to “Soft Light” and lower the opacity to 70%.

7. And the last step: create a new layer. Press D. Select a gradient of two colors and the “Circle” fill method. For blending options, select “Overlays” and you will achieve the desired effect.

Finishing rooms with plaster with an antique effect is considered a delicate type of surface decoration. Many finishing materials are quite demanding, so the approach to them must be special. Paint containing artificial latex also creates an antique effect on the surface of the walls.

You can apply antique plaster in the same way as conventional surface painting, using a roller or long-bristled brush. The composition is applied to the prepared surface using circular movements. The scuffed effect can be achieved by applying pressure to the brush when painting the surface unevenly.

The antique layer will be visible after grouting with a sponge or brush. To give the surface a shine, the applied layer of plaster is treated with wax after the paint has dried. If you use Venetian plaster, the use of this material will be limited, since it is used exclusively for interior work.

The resistance of the decorative coating to mechanical stress is hallmark finishing material when compared with Venetian plaster. It is an ideal coating for facades. The stability characteristics of the material are due to the formation of a layer of microporous film on the surface after the composition has completely dried.

The process of applying a plaster mixture with an antique effect consists of the following steps:

  1. Preparation of the base surface.
  2. Coating the surface.
  3. Bringing shine.

All visible irregularities or cracks should be removed from the walls, since there should not be any defects on the surface being treated. The surface must be clean and dry. Applying putty is not necessary; it is enough to use a primer. You need to wait 4 hours for it to dry.

You can apply 2 layers of different shades. Used for grouting walls following materials: sponge, cloth or fine sandpaper. The grouting method should be chosen depending on the degree of wear on the walls. At the last stage, the walls will need to be coated with wax.

Secrets of creating a surface with an antique effect

Antique plaster has the following advantages:

  • absence of toxic and flammable substances in the composition, which is environmentally friendly;
  • use in rooms with high humidity levels;
  • resistance to aggressive environmental influences;
  • versatility, that is, the ability to carry out both external and internal work;
  • low maintenance: the surface can be washed with water using detergents without solvents.

Many textured plasters are not made without lime. The use of white cement or gypsum in an antique plaster mixture involves the creation of a composition that has a binder base. These components allow them to provide high level plasticity, maintain the white color of the composition. The consumer purchases plaster mixtures that have an easy-to-lay consistency. This greatly simplifies the tinting process.

Craftsmen often use dry mixtures that are white. You can add the color of the desired shade to them at your own discretion. This antique plaster gives unlimited design possibilities. Execution result finishing works depends on the artistic preferences and skill of the performer.

Using craquelure for decoration

When decorating walls with an antique look, you can use the option of plaster, which has a single texture obtained by introducing special additives into the mixture. This effect is achieved after processing the covering layer. This provides a lot of opportunities to create an exclusive coating.

For example, you can focus on the effect of antiquity, the name of which comes from the French word “craquelure” - “craquelure”. The meaning of finishing is the formation of cobwebs and cracks on the surface, which can be beautifully highlighted. This decorating technique may seem complicated to a beginner, but achieving this result is quite simple.

When purchasing finishing materials, you should focus on Venetian plasters, which allow you to create the effect of antiquity. This is achieved by allowing the wet plaster to pass heat treatment. After applying the mixture, the surface must be dried using a household or construction hair dryer. With conventional plastering, the technology does not allow accelerating the drying of the material, otherwise such actions can lead to the appearance of cracks on the surface. This property of plaster can be used to create a “craquelure” effect.

Before applying antique plaster, it is necessary to use not only the starting putty, but also the finishing putty to level the surface. If the screed has not yet lost its plasticity after treatment with a hairdryer, you need to wait for it to completely harden. The time required for the composition to gain strength is indicated in the manufacturer's instructions.

To treat the surface after drying, a translucent shade can be used, tinted to the desired color using a glazing compound. Cracks on the surface are treated with a sponge, and the glaze on the surface is shaded. To make the drawing more noticeable and to shade it, you can use the technique of drawing cracks using a thin brush.

Craftsmen can use the technique of tinting the finishing putty in a contrasting color, which is used to level the surface. After the cracks open, a bottom layer of the desired shade will appear in them, which will look very beautiful.

Imitation of textures of natural materials

You can stylize the walls as antique not only by simulating an antique plaster coating, but also using the fashionable “art concrete” decor. It is performed on various surfaces, such as concrete or wood. The technology for applying antique decorative plaster requires careful reading of the instructions supplied with the finishing material.

First you need to clean the wall of the old coating and apply a layer of primer, which dries thoroughly after 72 hours. When the base is completely covered with primer, you can begin applying the underlay layer of plaster mixture with a wide spatula. The composition should be distributed evenly over the wall.

A trowel is used for leveling. The mineralization of the applied layer allows the application of the next portion of material for plastering the surface. The work is carried out with a wide paint brush based on the trimming method.

Manufacturers of Venetian plaster provide a wide selection of different options that allow you to stylize the surface of the walls like leather, velor, silk, or natural stone. These effects can be achieved using texture mixtures containing adhesive primers, glazing paints, waxes, and finishing varnishes.

Antique interior design is fashion trend, which has become widespread. You can use decorative plaster with an imitation of antique natural stone. The shade of the future coating is determined by decorative additives. The customer must select it at his own discretion.

Antique photo processing has many production methods. Today we will look at one of the simplest but most effective methods.

As an example, I use a photograph of one of the most beautiful areas of Kyiv.

The first step we'll do is create a noise effect:

  • create a new layer. To do this, I use the shortcut “Ctrl” + “J”;
  • reset color settings - key “D”. Changes after clicking can be seen at the bottom left. Color settings have become standard.

You should get the following:

The next step will bring us even closer to how to make an antique photo in Photoshop. And we need even more aging. For this we use “Noise”: “Filter” – “Noise” – “Add Noise”. In the window that opens, select the “Gaussian” method, and set the effect to 20%. I got the following:

Now we are very close to the finish line. We need to select the Soft Light blending mode. This gives us the following effect and antique photo processing begins to work:

Now, to add realism and even greater age, we will show how our work has faded in the sun, which inevitably happens with old photographs.

This task requires creating a new layer that needs to be placed on top of the existing ones. Fill the created layer with color No. “e6e1cc”. Now change the blending mode for the new layer, it will be “Color”. I got the following:

The work already looks pretty good, but still needs some work. I want to add scratches. To do this, create a new layer and press “D”. Next, from the “Filter” ¬– “Rendering” tab, select “Clouds”. Now again in the filters tab, select “Rendering” – “Fibers” and set the parameter “17” and “15”. Now we need to go to the “Images” – “Settings” or “Correction” – “Threshold” tab. Set the value to “15”. Now to complete the adjustment of this layer, go: “Filter” (Filter) ¬– “Blur” (Blur) – “Blur+” (Blur More).

The final touch: a “Soft Light” overlay, with the opacity set to 70%.
