Gazprom Marketing and Trading took into operation the new LNG tanker Lena River

During a ceremony held on Friday, October 4, 2013 at the HHI shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea, Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) commissioned a new gas tanker (serial number 2557), named Lena River. .

The Lena River tanker was chartered by Gazprom Marketing and Trading Group (GM&T) from the Greek LNG carrier operator Dainagaz and will be used by GM&T for several years. This is the third vessel chartered by the GM&T group from Dynagas, after the tanker Reka Ob, which last year became the world’s first LNG carrier to sail along the Northern Sea Route, and the tanker Reka Yenisei, which was put into operation in July.

GM&T's ever-expanding fleet of LNG carriers will be used to supply its growing global LNG trading portfolio.

The Lena River is a high-tech vessel with membrane-type cargo tanks with a cargo capacity of 155 thousand cubic meters. m, equipped with a three-fuel diesel-electric power plant. The ice class of the tanker is 1A and equipment for use in winter conditions allows the gas carrier to operate in ice conditions, including within the Northern Sea Route during open navigation.

The Lena River tanker is traditionally named after one of the three great Siberian rivers flowing into the Arctic Ocean, along with the Ob River and Yenisei River tankers.

Today, within the framework of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum - 2013, the Gazprom Group, represented by Gazprom Marketing and Trading (GM&T), signed a Strategic Partnership Agreement with OJSC United shipbuilding corporation» (USC) on the construction of LNG gas tankers, as well as an Agreement on strategic partnership in the classification and certification of LNG gas tankers with the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping and a Memorandum of Understanding with OAO Sovcomflot.

As part of the same ceremony, JSC Far Eastern Center for Shipbuilding and Ship Repair, on behalf of USC, signed Technology Transfer Agreements with several leading South Korean shipyards - world leaders in shipbuilding, as well as a Memorandum of Understanding with GTT, largest producer cargo systems for LNG gas tankers.

All these documents are part of a strategic initiative aimed at increasing Russian participation in all segments of Gazprom Group’s LNG transportation, including the development of LNG maritime transportation technologies, shipbuilding, ship repair, commercial operations and maritime personnel. One of the main components of its implementation is the construction and development of the Zvezda shipbuilding complex in the town of Bolshoy Kamen, Primorsky Territory.

The signed documents are aimed at developing cooperation in terms of organizing the participation of the Zvezda Insurance Company in the construction program of up to 13 new ice-class gas tankers with delivery from 2017 to 2021 for the future needs of the Gazprom Group. It is expected that Zvezda SK will be involved in the construction of each vessel under this program, and will initially produce base units, mega units and LNG cargo systems in partnership with one of the South Korean shipyards. After completing the construction of the Zvezda infrastructure, from 2020 the construction of LNG tankers will be able to be completely transferred to this shipyard.
