How to calculate the perimeter of a room for the purchase of finishing materials

When repairing an apartment or house, there is a moment when you need to know how much material you need to purchase. In order not to make a mistake with the volume, it is important to know how to calculate the perimeter of the room, its walls, floor and other surfaces.

Calculation of the number of wallpapers

This question arises almost at the very beginning of the repair, because you want to buy the right number of rolls so as not to experience a shortage, but also not to overpay for the excess. So, you need to know how to calculate the perimeter of the room.

What is the perimeter in general, everyone remembers from the school course - this is the sum of the lengths of all sides. If we are talking about a room, then - walls. So, to calculate the perimeter, you need to find out the length of all the walls. It is very easy to do this: you need to measure two adjacent ones and double the result. For example, if one wall is 4 meters long and the other 6, then its perimeter is 20 meters: 2x(4+6)=20.

Now you need to calculate how many rolls you need to purchase for such a room. In this situation, it is important not only to know how to calculate the perimeter of the room, but also to understand that knowledge of the height of the ceiling is also necessary. Suppose that in this case the room has a standard height of 2.5 meters.

Next, calculate the number of wallpapers that you want to purchase. Today, wallpapers with a width of 1 meter are becoming increasingly popular. Let's take this option as an example. Roll length remains standard - 10 meters.

Now, having all the necessary information, it is not at all difficult to calculate the required number of wallpapers.

It is best to show on a sample how to calculate the perimeter of a room. Examples are the best option for most buyers. So, with our dimensions, four strips of material (10: 2.5) will be obtained from one roll of wallpaper. These four strips will take four meters from our perimeter, since their width is 1 m. So, to calculate the number of rolls, you need to divide the perimeter by the number of meters that one roll of wallpaper covers: 20/4=5. It turns out that we need five rolls of wallpaper.

It is important to know: if the last action resulted in a non-integer number, it must be rounded up, even if tenths are not enough. That is, if it turns out that you need to purchase 5.15 rolls, you need to buy 6. Otherwise, there will simply be nothing to glue these 15 centimeters with.

Errors

In our calculation, we used the knowledge of how to calculate the perimeter of a room, but did not take into account other facts - the presence of a door and a window. Therefore, when calculating how much wallpaper you need to buy, do not forget to reduce them by the required number of stripes.

Floor covering

To buy flooring, it is also important to know how to calculate the perimeter of a room. The formula is the same: the sum of the lengths of all sides. There is no need to pay attention to doors and windows. It is enough to either measure two adjacent sides and multiply by two, or measure each side of the room and add these numbers.

Calculating the floor covering, knowing the perimeter and length, will not be difficult at all. Often on sites that sell these same coatings, there are special calculators. In them, you must enter the length and width of the room, the desired coverage. After that, information will appear on how much material needs to be purchased. If we are talking about linoleum, then the options for its widths correspond to the standard end sides of the room. Therefore, they buy it based on the length of the room.

If you buy tiles, parquet or laminate, more complex calculations are needed. It is probably better to use the help of managers working in a hardware store or outlet where you will buy coverage for this.

ceiling covering

This material is calculated similarly to the previous method. If we are talking about stretch or suspended ceilings, it is even easier - everything will be done by specially trained people who come for free measurements before concluding an agreement with the company.

As you can see, you should not have any problems with the calculations. Good luck!
