"Jazz is for everyone,

he is not elitist and not locked into clubs. Come on, listen to your Snoop Doggy Dogg, Pearl Jam and Gareth Brooks, but add a little Ellington, Basie and Coltrane to them,” the musician urges.

The “Triumph of Jazz” began with Igor Butman’s “Independent Jazz Festivals” in 1997 and 1998 at the Central House of Artists and the Concert Hall. P.I. Tchaikovsky, when it was still impossible to even think about the triumph of jazz at Russian concert venues. Then these concerts became a real sensation, uniting Russian and American jazzmen for the first time the highest level on the same stage.

Today, the “Triumph of Jazz” means brilliant performances at the Moscow International House of Music and the Igor Butman Club, concerts in St. Petersburg and a list of participating names that would be the envy of any European jazz producer. Over the past 17 years, the greatest McCoy Tyner, Lee Konitz, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Dave Holland, Gary Burton, Ahmad Jamal and a host of other stars performed at the “Triumph of Jazz” in Russia for the first time. And since 2015, as part of the main program of “Triumph”, the “Children’s “Triumph of Jazz”” has been taking place - the festival purposefully cultivates a literate and enthusiastic viewer.

This season, musicians from the USA and South Korea are setting the tone. The festival's headliner is a quartet of five-time Grammy winner and outstanding bassist Christian McBride. An all-around soldier and jack of all trades, he has achieved recognition as an instrumentalist, composer and arranger in a variety of genres: jazz, R&B, rock, hip-hop and even classical. His bass accompanied such voices as opera legend Kathleen Battle, Sting and Larisa Dolina, and Christian proudly put a joint photo with the “godfather” of soul James Brown on his Twitter and Facebook screensaver. On his last visit to Moscow, McBride performed a hurricane swing at the head of a piano trio a la Ray Brown, and this time he will present his new quartet without a pianist with two wind players - in this format Ornette Coleman created his avant-garde free jazz in the 50s - 60s 's, when such music was called New Thing, “new thing.” McBride, not without irony, dubbed his ensemble New Jawn, using a slang word from his native Philadelphia that replaces any thing, person or place.

Another instrumental quartet will be presented by saxophonist Chris Potter, an equally stellar peer of McBride, who has also repeatedly topped the reader and critic ratings of the authoritative Downbeat magazine, but is more focused on own projects and the search for his unique composer's voice, style and place in history. In the Moscow Tsaritsyno estate, he, together with Joshua Redman, performed almost neoclassical arrangements in a group of four saxophones, in other works he tried himself in compositions with electric guitars and synthesizers, engaged string sections and has already released two recordings on the prestigious European label ECM. The current quartet can be considered a return to a chamber, but more energetic acoustic sound, continuing the success of the concept album The Sirens.

The Moscow Jazz Orchestra will perform twice with special foreign guests. Vocalist Yun Sun Na, who was born in South Korea and continued her musical education in France, amazes with the breadth of her range, both technically, from a fragile almost whisper to operatic techniques, and genre, from folk rock to Metallica and Tom Waits - and all this jazz. Pianist and composer John Beasley earned a Grammy nomination for his highly modernist (with echoes of trip-hop, drum 'n' bass and neo-soul) big band arrangements of tunes by Thelonious Monk, who made a significant contribution to the creation of the language of modern jazz at the dawn of bebop. . New York trumpeter Mike Rodriguez will perform with the trio of drummer Oleg Butman, and vocalist Alina Rostotskaya with her ensemble JazzMobile will represent the new generation of Moscow jazz.
