Aerography lessons. Try yourself in the art of airbrushing

Hello! Today we will talk about such a necessary skill in airbrushing as drawing mountains. This is one of highlights when creating landscapes and animalistics on a car. They create depth and scale, balance the composition, fill the empty space. Now more.

It is really convenient and often used in automotive airbrushing. However, no matter how high-quality the foreground is, sloppyly made mountains will ruin everything. The most common mistakes when creating mountains are duplication of elements (the same hills one after another throughout the work), oversimplification (the mountain is a triangle), excessive contrast (which is more striking than the foreground).

Therefore, today we will step by step analyze the process of creating mountains in great detail. As you have already noticed, there is also a wild breed kitten in the work, but today we will deprive him of attention. The drawing was made on board the car using the freehand technique, i.e. without using stencils. Thus, using this technique and practicing several times on paper, in the future you will be able to easily draw mountains by hand in the right amount, successfully fitting them into any landscape.

So, what we have: the side of the car, or rather 2 doors, the Grafo T2 airbrush, Inspire paints and the desire to draw black and white mountains, let's start!

The color of the car is black. Initially, we apply a gray substrate. From this shade, it will be easy to go to both lighter and darker tones.

We choose a light source and with light transparent lines of light gray, trying on the car body, we begin to outline the lines of the mountains from the illuminated side.

We continue to lay spots, not going too much into detail. All work is done without stencils, so the ridges of the mountains must be worked out so that the border between them and the sky is clear, not blurry.

In some places, we add backlight on the illuminated sections of the mountains.

Workplace.

The shady part of the mountains in its mass cannot be uniform in tone, so make some places a little lighter. Taking a darker color, we outline uncovered sections of rocks in the shade.

To draw the exposed parts of the rocks on the illuminated side, I used the same color as for the shadows. Therefore, the rocks in the shade are darker than in the light.

Oddly enough, there are still weirdos who paint their models with a regular brush, but it can be easily argued that airbrushing in 99% of cases (not for figures and some other specifics) will give an incomparably better result when painting. Airbrush tuned in skillful hands works wonders, allowing you to bring the model as close as possible to the copied original.

A lot has been written about working with an airbrush, but some points (for example, working with acrylic paints) I would like to clarify, and let's just say so. it's time...

But first things first. The most basic information.

An airbrush is a tool that sprays paint in a kind of "torch" formed by an air stream mixed with tiny droplets of paint.

The airbrush allows you to dose the supply of this mixture and apply it in the form of a thin film on the surface to be painted. A good airbrush, when used correctly, “can” make spots or stripes with a diameter (width) of 1.5-2 mm, and therefore sometimes it is possible, and even necessary, to do without masks when applying, for example, camouflage to Luftwaffe aircraft.

There are two main types of airbrushes: the so-called solitary and double actions.

For the first, when adjusting with a key (or button), only the air supply is controlled, for the second, both air and paint are simultaneously controlled. The former are simpler, cheaper, have fewer parts, which, moreover, are more convenient to clean. But they "do not know how" to make small spots and stripes and are more roughly regulated. The second ones are, accordingly, more accurate in work, but more expensive, contain more details (which “tolerate” rough or careless handling worse), their cleaning is more delicate and i ore process. Of course, this is the most general assessment.

If it is possible to take an imported one, see for yourself (which is very desirable somewhere in the outback, away from specialized "shops") in its capabilities, consult with the "grandfathers from the stand" and make a decision.

Of course, one airbrush is half the battle in painting models and, alas, not at all “sex” in the ratio of upcoming fats to the source of compressed air, which is so necessary for the success of the process. However, there are options. Let's start with the cheapest. You should not buy, "bought" for simplicity, disposable branded cartridges with a charge of compressed air - they are enough for one or two small models, and the pressure drops significantly when air is produced from them. A slightly better alternative to the latter is an inflated car tire (the larger it is, the longer the operating time) and carbon dioxide cylinders (there is a regulator and a pressure gauge). The latter, for a relatively small fee, can be recharged, they will never drive condensate, but they require careful handling and safety during charging and storage. But if the assembly of the model is not a sporadic process and life without plastic is not nice, you need a compressor.

airbrush compressor

Of course the most The right way- unfasten several hundred “greens” and get an almost silent shiny branded handsome man with a receiver, filters, a regulator and a pressure indicator. A noisy but cheaper alternative to a reciprocating compressor, a membrane counterpart will cost less. But the pressure it creates is less. (The ability to regulate pressure, as will be discussed below, is sometimes very important, because there is usually not much of it.)

To date, the JAS 1203 compressor is optimal: a productive, quiet-running compressor with a receiver - I recommend it.

I've been using this for a few years now:

Excellent results will be obtained from the use of compressors from household and industrial refrigerators (in Russia, our brother has the most of these). It is easy to modify such a compressor with a homemade receiver from a plastic bottle.

It will significantly reduce pressure fluctuations (pulsations) and prevent oil and moisture (which is unacceptable, otherwise droplets of unwanted liquids will ruin the whole thing !!!) into the airbrush. The receiver can be equipped, if the compressor is new, with a pressure relief needle or something similar to control the pressure downwards. It is possible, for example. insert a piece of metal tube with a hole drilled on its wall into the line. Overlapping it to varying degrees with a flexible tube of the line, we get the same effect as from the needle.

Of course, there are many proprietary filters that perform the same functions. In general, ways to purchase compressors and (or) their refinement is a big and painful topic. I would like to wish novice colleagues to be more inventive and entrepreneurial. But vacuum cleaners and car compressors, alas, will not work - I omit the details - they do not create the necessary pressure.

Paints are now in bulk, as well as articles about them. Of course, expensive paints from Acromaster, Tamiya, Gunze Sangyo and more affordable Model Master, DuPont, Humbrol and Revell are definitely better than the “nitra” taken for half a liter from familiar artists, but they are not a panacea for very unimportant results when using them, and there is another nitra better than that the same killed - matte paint from Humbrol. Read special articles, study photos and, in accordance with your wallet, make a choice. It is highly desirable to take branded paints, but not necessary. You can, through trial and error, stock up on occasional nitro paints. However, with regard to adhesion and hiding power, then a good "firm" is definitely preferable. Yes, and dispersion is much better.

To work successfully with an airbrush, you need the paint to be of the proper density and not contain foreign particles and dirt. We will talk about cleaning the airbrush and the features of working with acrylic paints later, but for now, remember the following. Stir the paint thoroughly before use.

If necessary, add thinner to the paint, but do this not in a can of paint, but in a separate container. You can use, for example, film cases or other suitable containers. Spray paint consistency is "milk". When rocking a jar of paint, it leaves faint translucent marks on the walls.

I will make a reservation right away that the degree of dissolution is a delicate process. Glossy paints require slightly more solvent than matte paints. In addition, domestic nitro solvents (acetone.646, 647, etc.) are quite suitable in a number of cases of replacing the "company", you just need to take into account that the larger the number, the heme is "heavier" solvent, because. it dries longer and, with a longer drying time, gives the paint more time to spread evenly over the painted surface, which means it will make it less matte. For any ambiguity, experiment first, then apply the appropriate solvent.

To prepare the color (if it is not ready), also use a separate container.

If the paint is of unknown origin or old, filter it at least through clean gauze (2 layers).

Do not pour the dissolved paint back into the branded jar!

Rinse the airbrush after changing the color with a clean solvent (which was used for paint), and after completing work on the next model, disassemble the airbrush and clean it thoroughly.

If you save paint "on the side", make sure. that you have not cast a settled binder. (The paint consists of a coloring pigment, a binding liquid and a solvent. There is also a matte base - everywhere the modelers of the USSR used tooth powder in its role.) In general, mix it thoroughly before any paint transfusion.

Video: Working with an airbrush

In modern life, everyone is trying to stand out, show their imagination and express themselves. For car owners, this is tuning, modernization, and most importantly, airbrushing.
Not only professional artists can paint cars and walls with an airbrush

Lessons for beginners

It is an artistic painting on the surface of cars, computers, phones, household appliances and even fabrics. The history of art began at the end of the 19th century, but reached Russia by the end of the 20th, but today domestic artists are not far behind foreign ones.

Artistic painting is carried out with the help of special tools, brushes and paints. The apparatus for airbrushing is called an airbrush and consists of needles, nozzles and springs. But not everything is as scary as it seems at first glance. For motorists who want to master this art, there are books on airbrushing that describe in detail the features of the painting technique.

And this drawing technique has both advantages and disadvantages. Advantages of airbrushing:

  • The uniqueness of the picture, the ability to express the ideas and desires of the car owner with high accuracy. You will be sure that no one has such a second drawing;
  • Protection of the surface of the body, due to several layers of varnish, is applied to the finished drawing. This provides the car with protection from scratches, durability of the coating and the ability to correct minor defects yourself by polishing the coating;
  • It is difficult to steal such a car, because because of the pattern it is more noticeable and remembered by passers-by;
  • Caring for the pattern is simple, it is enough to regularly polish the surface using protective mixtures.

Airbrushing is not the cheapest option for decorating a car body

Can't say enough about the cons. Disadvantages of painting;

  • High cost. Prices for drawings differ due to the complexity of execution, but painting remains today a luxury and an infrequent occurrence;
  • Airbrush restoration is a complex process that requires the work of an experienced artist. Therefore, in the case car accident restoration a car with a pattern will cost a pretty penny.

There are fewer disadvantages of airbrushing than advantages, because this is the reason for the popularity of artistic painting. We will study the basics of airbrushing and understand the intricacies of this matter.

Where to begin

And the process of artistic painting begins with your idea and the decision to draw a picture. Look for painting options on the Internet, look at ready-made pictures for airbrushing, create a variant of the picture in your thoughts so that you know approximately what you want to get in the end.

For example, airbrushing on a red background looks good with a painting of orange and yellow flowers, and black and white drawings for airbrushing are chosen by owners of gray, black and white cars, which allows you to create a discreet but spectacular image.

For airbrushing you will need a special tool and paints.

Once you have realized your desires, you need to choose a service where the work itself will be carried out. There are many paths to choose from. Some follow the advice of friends, others learn through online reviews. But no matter how you find the right workshop, you need to personally verify the professionalism of the masters and the condition of the studio. The leading indicator of the well-being of the service is the presence of a dyeing chamber, which serves as a dryer for the car. Often, experts do without it, but it will take more time for airbrushing and affect the quality of the picture.

Please note that work with the car takes at least two weeks, and the exact period depends on the complexity of the drawing and may increase from a month.

Having decided on the pattern and service, it's time to work closely with the artist who works with your car. At this stage sketches for modeling are created. You will receive a three-dimensional car model with a printed pattern that will convey the features of the painting and allow you to consider highlights, shadows, and shades. It will not be possible to see a 100% result in advance, but thanks to modeling, you will get the most approximate version. appearance auto. Try to make your own adjustments, consult with the master - all this will help improve the drawing.

Having corrected, it is sent to the service for washing, cleaning and grinding. This is necessary so that in the process of applying the drawing on the body there is no small debris and dust, due to which the painting will deteriorate in a couple of months.

After that, the car must be "matted". Many people think that this word means the complete removal of the paintwork, but this is not so. With the help of special tools with solid particles, small scratches are applied to the surface of the car, which the human eye will not notice. But thanks to these scratches, the pattern adheres to the surface of the car and is firmly fixed.

It is better to train to draw with an airbrush on unnecessary sheets of metal.

It should be noted that airbrushing is available for all body types, so everyone can transform their car.

After matting, the car is sent to the hands of the artist, who applies the pattern to the surface. It is not necessary to be present at the painting, but it is better to control the process, if you want to correct the drawing during work, this will be possible only with the presence of the car owner.

How to draw with an airbrush?

But if you're a creative person or don't want to trust a car service, it's time to learn the art of airbrushing on your own. To master the techniques of artistic painting, you need to understand how the airbrush works and what this tool is.

  1. Nozzle - a part necessary to adjust the diameter of the lines applied to the coating of the machine. With it, you can draw thin lines with an airbrush, but this skill is not so easy to master.
  2. A tank is a container for paints with which a drawing is applied.
  3. Needle - regulates the flow of paint. Not available in spray.
  4. The lever regulates the air supply.
  5. The adjusting screw helps control the air pressure.
  6. The air valve supplies air through the nozzles.
  7. Handle that can be removed.

Advice. Beginning artists are advised to use an airbrush with the tank at the top. This model is not so perfect, but it is convenient for practicing painting. When purchasing materials, pay attention to those that are easy to work with for a beginner.

Even an inexpensive airbrush can create a masterpiece

You should not buy expensive airbrush accessories for a novice master. Most expensive devices are designed to apply complex paintings that a novice artist cannot repeat.

It's all about non-contact. Keep the nozzle away from the coating and hold the tool at a 90* angle to the surface to get a neat airbrush drawing. Before starting work, you need to connect the airbrush to the compressor with a hose and blow out the nozzle. After each paint change, repeat blowing with solvents to prevent paint mixing.

When choosing a painting, pay attention to simple drawings for airbrushing. Do not immediately try to paint on a car - try the airbrush on household appliances or other hard surfaces.

Do-it-yourself airbrushing

Airbrush needs adjustment before painting

After studying the theory and gaining initial skills, airbrush drawings for beginners should be complicated. The first option is a gradient - a smooth transition of shades from one to another. You won’t be able to get the skill of this painting right away; you need to study special books and materials for artistic painting. Airbrushing on paper will help you understand how colors transition correctly and what needs to be done to do this.

Beginning artists believe that it is enough to darken distant objects and brighten nearby ones. But this effect only works if the object being drawn does not cast glare. Otherwise, it is required to apply two lines of different shades to the surface and spray the coloring composition from different distances, applying layers on top of each other.

It is carried out according to the same principle. To get a dark shade, the airbrush is brought closer to the surface, and for a light one, the tool is moved away.

But in general, it is not easy to implement ideas and drawings for airbrushing. To get an attractive painting, you need to study art aids and drawing guides. And a couple of tips for beginners in this art.

Airbrushing for beginners requires at least basic drawing skills on paper. It is better to start your work with geometric shapes that are easier to repeat from paper to a hard surface.

WATCH THE VIDEO INSTRUCTIONS

It is worth noting that the art of airbrushing in modern world is gaining momentum, but there are not so many real masters of this business. Therefore, it is never too late to learn art painting, and most importantly, the presence of talent in such a matter is not necessary. If you have a desire to learn and improve, then all doors are open to you. Good luck in your endeavors!

Anyone who intends to master the art of airbrushing certainly knows what it is. So a brief description of This type of visual art is given more to introduce the reader to the topic than to enlighten him.

So, airbrush art (there is another synonymous term - aerobrushing), like any other type of painting, is, first of all, drawing. On the certain types and direction of painting is divided depending on the technique, materials and tools used. Airbrushing uses liquid or powdered dyes to create an image, which are applied by spraying with compressed air. An airbrush is used instead of an artist's brush, and a variety of surfaces (mobile panel, refrigerator door, car body) are used instead of a canvas.

Airbrushers are not born

If airbrushing is an art, then you need to have natural abilities? Talent? Desirable, but not required. It is enough to be able to draw within the framework of the school curriculum, learn how to use an airbrush and acquire the necessary tools.

"Gentleman's" kit for a beginner airbrusher:

  • airbrush
  • Airbrush*
  • Compressor*
  • Drying chamber*
  • Paints
  • Drawing surface
  • Solvent
  • Paint containers

The * symbol indicates the positions that are mainly necessary for the systematic and, above all, professional occupation of this craft. And you can master the intricacies of the craft, which is airbrushing for beginners, with a minimum set of tools and materials.

Initial Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in traditional drawing techniques (drawing on paper)
  • Knowledge of Photoshop (or other graphic editors) to create preliminary sketches
  • Developed imagination and aesthetic taste
  • Patience, perseverance and perseverance

ABCs for beginner airbrushers

Paints. There are matte and shiny (with a metallic effect), black (absorbing light) and fluorescent (self-luminous).

Spray. The simplest paint sprayer under pressure is a regular spray can.

Airbrush. Having mastered all the basics of "aerosol" skill, you can move on to work more subtle and accurate. And here you will already need a special tool - a spray gun or an airbrush. The spray gun (painting) is easy to use, inexpensive, but only suitable for wide spraying of paint. For finer spraying, you will need an airbrush (a small spray gun that looks like a fountain pen). It uses compressed air, is equipped with a regulator and interchangeable heads, which allows you to spray paint with a stream of different thicknesses and obtain different spray densities.

Airbrush. There are many different types of airbrushes, but they are all almost the same and differ only in price, manufacturer and equipment. As for quality, for little money (up to 2000 rubles) you can buy a very decent tool. If you had to hold a fountain pen in your hands, then you won’t have to get used to the airbrush for a long time. The difference concerns only the index finger, which must always be on the button. A professional airbrush is not cheap (5000-25000 rubles).

But it is not at all necessary to buy an expensive tool, the main thing is that it be of high quality and have a double-action regulator, when with the help of one button the paint and air supply is regulated at the same time. In single action airbrushes, the air supply is not regulated, which complicates the work of the artist, especially if the drawing is complex and includes transitional color zones. An important detail: the diameter of the nozzle should be up to 0.3 mm, no more. With a diameter greater than 0.3 mm, thin lines cannot be drawn.

Compressor. For a new compressor, you will have to pay at least 3,500 rubles. Although why not pump up a regular car camera? It is quite capable of providing the required pressure in the range of 200–500 g/cm². There are many different types and modifications of compressors, but the main characteristics in which they differ can be reduced to the following:

  • Noise level: high (very noisy in operation), medium (relatively quiet), low (silent)
  • Receiver size (if equipped): with large receiver and small
  • Power level: high (high power) and low (low power)

Which one to choose depends on the financial capabilities of the buyer, on the nature of the tasks assigned to the compressor and on the conditions in which it will be operated. If a dwelling is used as a workshop, and even in apartment building with poor sound insulation, then you need to choose a membrane model, the working sound of which does not exceed 55 dB. And even better - an oil silent compressor.

Additional accessories. With the help of special nozzles, when applying paint, you can get the effect of marble, natural stone, wood, water surface, etc.

From elementary to complex

Before you decide on a large-scale project in the form of an infernal flame on the hood or a predatory lion on the doors of a car, you need to moderate your creative ardor and start by developing automatic movements so as not to think about how to hold the airbrush, where to put your finger and at what angle to direct the jet of paint. A real training ground for honing skills can be your own apartment (unless, of course, this causes violent protests from its other inhabitants). Painting a refrigerator, a computer and other household appliances as thesis will not work, but as a term paper for a “student”-freshman, it will fit perfectly.

Just as an inept hand of a first-grader writes out on sticks and circles, laying the foundations of the future calligraphic handwriting, so regular, tireless drawing of simple figures, lines and smooth transitions at the beginning of training will allow the future virtuoso master to master all the wisdom of the art of airbrushing to perfection.

You can comprehend this science on your own, choosing the path of trial and error, popularly called the “poke method”, endlessly experimenting, trying, quitting and starting again. If you suffer for a long time, perhaps something will work out. But it will take a lot of time, effort and money to paint. Wouldn't it be better to learn from the real masters of the airbrush craft. Moreover, this can be done almost without financial investments. On the Internet there is information about airbrushing, lessons for beginners and ready-made schemes describing the technique of execution for different drawings. Here is an example of such a simple and very useful lesson, of which there are many on the Internet.

Surface preparation for airbrushing and dye preparation

For the lesson, you will need three landscape sheets. We take the first sheet, fix it on a flat surface with adhesive tape or magnets (if the surface is metal). It is desirable to divide the sheet with lines into several parts in order to create a drawing sequentially in fragments.

Note: The landscape sheet is only suitable for teaching, as it is the cheapest material. To create non-educational drawings, more durable materials (metal, plastic, glass) are needed.

For serious paint projects, it is better to choose expensive, professional paints, but airbrushing for beginners is not so exacting, and any paints, even the cheapest ones, can be used for the lesson. We dilute the working mixture in the following proportion: □ (1/4) paint and □ (3/4) solvent. The solvent is suitable for domestic 646. We pre-filter the paint, cleaning it from small dust particles and foreign inclusions. This will eliminate the need to frequently clean the airbrush in the future, which will require its complete disassembly.

We are learning to carefully pour such an amount of paint that when drawing it does not splash out over the edge of the container and does not spoil the drawing. The lesson involves drawing small details, you will need a little paint, so we fill the container by about 1/6. Add paint if necessary.

Airbrush Calligraphy: Other Practices

We begin to draw simple sticks with an inclination to one side, then horseshoes and circles. We continue in the same spirit, but only the tilt of the sticks and the direction of the horseshoes are now in the opposite direction.

In the process, we learn to correctly calculate the force when pulling the trigger on the airbrush in order to maintain a uniform outline of the lines. Also at this stage, the ability to correctly determine and maintain a suitable distance from the airbrush to the working surface is worked out. For sticks and circles, this distance will be approximately 3-4 cm.

We put the sticks aside, and on another sheet we learn to draw a gradient (smooth color transitions), slightly spraying the paint. We combine the acquired skills - we give volume to each square on the first sheet, making it convex. We also do with each stick and circle in these squares. We shade their edges by applying layers of paint of different intensity, carefully adjusting the distance. To get a light shadow, we move the airbrush away from the sheet, for the effect of a thick dark shadow, we bring it closer.

Creative and homework

We independently invent other lines and shapes, combine them into a common drawing in such a way that a certain mood or idea is felt in it. Depending on the idea and the emotional content of the future drawing, we select the thickness and clarity of the lines, the sharpness / smoothness of the gradient, the saturation of the shadow.

Practice creating patterns and giving them volume on other surfaces, using various paint application techniques. Learn the basic basics of drawing elementary shapes to learn how to combine them into one impressive image.

To those who have successfully mastered all the necessary skills in the initial lessons and in the process practical exercises, a real, workshop (with an emphasis on the first letter “a”) airbrushing gradually reveals its secrets - master classes will help to significantly improve your level, master all the tricks of this craft or art (the definition depends on personal talent and attitude). They are group (class in small groups) and individual (training in accordance with the principle of "master - student").

At the basic courses, you can learn the basics of painting and the art of mixing paints, master the airbrush and "put your hand", master the skills to use patterns and stencils, learn how to use a brush and create realistic effects, be able to bring the work from the beginning to the final processing (surface varnishing). On special, author's - they teach any one specific technique on the example of some "guru" who has reached perfection in this art.

Only after going through a not necessarily long, but difficult course of study, it is realistic to move over time from the category of “amateur airbrusher” to the category of “professional master”.

As the leading airbrush school in Russia, we have developed own system training for beginners, so that anyone can easily enroll with us and be sure that the necessary skills will be developed. In particular, trainers conduct airbrushing lessons for beginners.

The course provides an introduction to the art, teaching the basics, techniques, key principles, etc. The program is structured in such a way that each student receives the maximum amount of theoretical information and practical skills that will become the right basis for further work.
