Is businessman a profession or a way of life? But on the other hand.

There is a strong belief in our society that the entrepreneur is the pinnacle of the social chain. That there is a high spire on Maslow's pyramid, and his name is business. Own business is good, but it is wrong to think that everyone needs it and everyone is capable of it.

This article will be useful to those who want to start their own business or are worried that they are not an entrepreneur.

Who is a businessman

Within the framework of this article, we will agree to call businessmen (entrepreneurs) people who create some value - material or not - and sell it on the free market. They themselves look for buyers, solve administrative issues themselves, pay their own salaries, and pay taxes to the state.

Employees - the level of ordinary performers or top managers who are paid in company shares and options - are not businessmen. Yes, to some extent they own part of the company and they can take part in the operational management of it, but the business is still someone else's, they have less responsibility and headaches.

A simple farmer who grows and sells cucumbers is much more of a businessman than a fancy programmer in a start-up who is paid part of his salary in stock options.

The first builds greenhouses, plants seeds, monitors growth, saves dead crops, looks for wholesale buyers, concludes contracts, solves storage and logistics issues, reinvests profits in the business - and so on in a circle. The second one comes to the office, writes code and receives a fixed salary.

We do not in any way belittle the work of a programmer and do not praise the farmer - we only say that their work is fundamentally different.

If everyone were entrepreneurs

Imagine a society in which absolutely everyone is a businessman, of greater or lesser caliber. Everyone would have to try their best to earn a living with their skills.

One person is not able to build a big company, plant, enterprise. This means that those things and processes, the creation of which requires machine labor, hundreds of hands and the accompanying chain of research, logistics and marketing, disappear. On the other hand, niche and “craft” industries, handicrafts and retail trade are developing.

In a thriving small business society, competition is fierce.

The number of the same type of offers in the markets rolls over. Citizens of a society of self-employed lucky people are forced to seek and dig blue oceans in the desert - otherwise the business will not survive.

Entrepreneurs are forced to join pools in order to do together what cannot be done alone. For example, to establish a network of supplies of goods from / to another continent, to build a factory.

In any case, produce cars, household appliances, medical equipment, weapons are beyond the power of one, even the most savvy and skillful lone businessman. This requires a simple (and preferably cheap) work force, the fact of existence of which does not fit with the idea of sweeping entrepreneurship.

Entrepreneurs are not born

Of course they become. Education plays an important role in the development of a future entrepreneur. A child who observes the efforts and results of a self-employed parent develops a different way of thinking. He sees an example, and working for himself becomes as natural a model for him as "school - technical school - factory" for some of his peers.

Such a child is no better or worse, he just looks at things differently. But even for him it can be useful to work for hire in the future in order to understand how everything works, how to work in a team, how to be responsible not only to himself, but also to someone else.

As a rule, all successful businessmen:

1. They try.

If they see potential profitable idea on which you can earn. They take action, which is why they are called entrepreneurs. The mindset of many people is simply not sharpened by the search for opportunities.

2. Not afraid to make mistakes.

Entrepreneurs understand that failure is an integral part of business. They are as natural as the change of seasons. There are no failures only for those who do nothing. In our society, failures are shy and prefer to remain silent about them. But in vain - they say that a person tries, searches and does not give up. Many Western recruiters note that they are more willing to hire a person with experience in their own business/project than without it.

3. Take risks.

In business there is general principles but there is no guarantee of success. Almost everyone would be a businessman if business was not accompanied by risk. But there is always a risk, and many are more comfortable avoiding it, preferring stability. Alas, stability is the same today and tomorrow. And if you take a risk, you can earn more money.

4. Plow.

This word well reflects the volume of work and lifestyle of businessmen. They do not have the concept of "working day" and even more so "end of the working day." But there is a business that needs to be constantly developed. Not all of us are ready to work 12-16 hours a day, even if in the long run it will give more freedom and money.

5. Rely on themselves.

All successful business people have an internal locus of control. That is, they take responsibility for their business and life. Do not shift it to the employer, the state, relatives, colleagues and difficult times. Making excuses is the national sport. Much easier to find external cause their failures rather than admitting their mistakes.

6. See opportunities in problems.

Sounds like a rule of life from a glossy magazine, but it's true. Competition, conquest, struggle - this is how ideological entrepreneurs see their life and work. Such a fighting approach helps, especially in our realities with devaluations, income surges, bribes and kickbacks. Against this background, the greenhouse conditions of employees look like a fairy tale. In it, a good employer himself defeats the villains - the Crisis and the Competitor.

Main difficulty

It lies in the fact that any product or service must be able to sell. And with this, many of us have very big problems. We are either modest and stewed, or we go too far with perseverance. In the second case, a person gets the feeling that they are trying to "sell" him. So, it’s not even worth evaluating - immediately in denial.

Selling is not easy, but it is sales that help a business survive and grow. No wonder the American proverb divides profits so categorically: "A dollar - to the one who invented it, 10 - to the one who made it, 100 - to the one who sold it."

Are you familiar with the idea that Apple was able to achieve success thanks to a powerful tandem of engineer and entrepreneur? Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak complemented each other perfectly, and each of them by itself could not build a successful corporation. It is worth recognizing that there are more Wozniaks in the world. There are far fewer people with a strong entrepreneurial acumen, "feel" and charisma of a leader than talented engineers or just hardworking performers.

You can do your job very well. Bake delicious cakes. Lay "eternal" stoves. Develop a beautiful design. But if you can’t sell yourself as a specialist (you are shy, you suffer from the “impostor syndrome”, you are lazy), your fate is hired work. And there, on it, you, most likely, one day will become cramped and bored, and you will think: “But it could…”

Perhaps they could. But here the employer will take care of everything. He will share a piece of the pie with you, and most pick it up and put it on a plate with the inscription "entrepreneur". Just don’t think that this plate fell into his hands by accident and he is the lucky one who was smiled at by the bird of happiness tomorrow. He earned his plate and pie on it.

but on the other hand

Many try to start their own business, fail one or more times and go back to work for someone else. Most often this happens because a person brings his old employee mindset into his business. He wants to get the results of business in the form of independence and money, but he does not want to work like a businessman and does not know how.

The level of motivation - that's what primarily differs wage-earners from entrepreneurs. A vigorous start to your business without strong motivation and passion will gradually die out under difficulties and laziness, turn into survival and testing. And your unloved business is somehow even worse than your unloved work for hire: the latter can often be left without any special consequences.

Your own business is a fundamentally new level of responsibility for your life, courage and desire for freedom. Do you want to start your own business? Fine! What drives you in this desire? Only the crunch of fresh banknotes without love of freedom will not be able to motivate you for a long time and lead you through the deserts of crises.

Does everyone have to be businessmen?

Of course not. Most people are simply not able to run their own business due to their thinking, character, personality traits. But that doesn't make them losers. They can be excellent specialists, diligent workers and talented people.

Entrepreneurs are not a profession that can be learned in correspondence courses. It is a way of thinking, a system of values and an outlook on life. You can learn this only in practice, ideally with a good mentor in the form of a business partner. In the second case, education by an entrepreneurial parent can be a powerful tool for a future businessman.

Are you unable to sell yourself as a specialist? Are you trying, but a wave of uncertainty, fear and a desire to sit behind the safe wall of the “contract” immediately rolls over? The business is not yours. At least for now.

This wonderful post caught our eye on VK.com. In it, the author reasonably explains why, in matters of relationships or building a family, it is better to avoid people involved in business, and prefer them to "simple romantics, brave pilots and sailors."

For girls, the image of a businessman looks something like this: successful, with money, generous, in a good car, works little, rests a lot, everything in his life is good. But…

In fact, everything is completely different. You will face many difficulties and problems, and many times you will regret that you did not choose another man for yourself.

Memorize and write it down.

Businessman is not a profession

To begin with, understand that a businessman is not a profession, it is a way of life and thinking. What is the downside here? Yes, very simple. The fact that when a person has a profession, some one occupation (musician, artist, engineer), he thinks in a single vector, you know about what you can expect from him. A businessman, on the other hand, is a kind of set of incomprehensible things, he tries all the time, experiments, he is completely unpredictable. And maybe in terms of nice gifts, this is also good, but in terms of everything else, for most girls it will be a lot of stress.

Businessman character

Next, character. There are no businessmen with an easy complaisant character. A businessman has a very difficult character, demanding behavior, most often uncompromising. In business, there is no other way. There is no room for slack or compromise. It is naive to think that there is one person in business and another at home. For a businessman, there is no work/home switch... And this is the next problem...

businessman work schedule

A businessman ALWAYS works! Even when it doesn't work, it works. Even when he is resting, he is working. Even when he gives you flowers on a date and says nice things, he works. Business is a continuous brain process. A businessman cannot disconnect from work like other people. He constantly needs to think about everything, keep it under control, calculate possible situations. Moreover, when he is not at work, he analyzes everything that is happening around and tries to shift it to his business. Business for a businessman is a virus that cannot be cured.

When a businessman on a date gives you flowers and says nice things, he is working.

A businessman does not have weekdays or weekends. All days are working days for him. Moreover, for him there is no concept of early / late or morning / evening. There is a concept of "convenient time for a deal / negotiations / business, etc." And if he considers that 3 nights on Sunday is convenient for a meeting, then he will go to this meeting.

The main value of a businessman

For a businessman, the most important thing in life is his business. And this must be understood. Yes, of course, when a wife and children appear, then other values \u200b\u200bappear, but until this moment, the main thing is only business. Yes, in fact, children are a kind of business for him. A relationship with a girl for a businessman is like investing in a startup. It’s very risky, it’s not a sure thing that it will work out, so at the early stages we are ready to put a high degree of probability that the business (family) will not work out. Therefore, a businessman, although he is ready to devote time and attention to such a “project”, is much less than his main business / business.

When a girl thinks that a businessman has a lot of money, she most likely does not assume that he will never spend most of this money on clothes, gifts, etc. Even if his wage millions, he will spend only a small part of this money on recreation and entertainment, he will return most of it to business or invest in other projects. The businessman thinks creatively. Spending money is not creation in his concept. So, when you see a fur coat for 100 thousand rubles, and think about how beautiful you will look in it, a businessman sees in this fur coat 2-4 salaries of his employee or a lost profit of 15 or more% per annum, with possible increase in business capitalization.

Let's get back to the schedule. As I already wrote, for a businessman there are no weekdays or weekends, for him every day is a work day. Therefore, it is useless to ask him to spend the weekend with you if he decided to work. Plus, a businessman tries to think in terms of efficiency. Therefore, he will most likely decide that it is much more profitable to work for a couple of months without days off at all, and only then, on the other hand, have a full rest for 1-2 weeks in warm countries. So get used to this schedule. But in any case, do not forget that he will work on vacation.

“Is business more important to you than me?”

It is extremely rare for a businessman to disconnect from the business process. And I repeat, for a businessman, his business is the most important thing in life. And do not try to provoke him with questions like: “Is business more important to you than me?” If you don’t want to get a truthful answer. He will seem to be around, but you will feel lonely.

Friendship through the eyes of a businessman

A businessman rarely meets with his friends, unless it is necessary to discuss business. Even less often, he is ready to meet with the girl's friends. Because he thinks in efficiency. To find out how things are, just call. Communicating with someone without getting valuable information that may be useful in the future is inefficient. And he definitely won’t ride with you every week to your parents’ “visit them”, because what is that?! That's right - inefficient.

When will a businessman find peace?

Business is always development. Any goal is intermediate, no end goal. Therefore, a businessman will never calm down in his passion for business. But to you girls, his passion can easily fade away.

The businessman loves development and diversity. This is the main problem for creating a family with a businessman. It will be extremely difficult for you to surprise him, and you have to constantly improve. And a lot of people think it's easy. Perhaps, but not forever.

What does he want from you?

Do not believe a businessman who wants to have just a beautiful girl nearby and arrange home comfort. Nonsense! If he needs comfort, he will hire a governess; if he needs food, he will hire a cook. He needs something more... And what exactly - he sometimes does not know himself, because he is always in search.

And it's important to understand. A huge number of girls are hunting for businessmen, they are some kind of “top models”, only among men. In men, intelligence and the ability to provide for a family and offspring are most valued, which is why businessmen are always in the center of female attention. And in order to not only win it, but also to keep it, you need to try very hard. And yes, I remind you that only you need this, he does not need to hold you back, for him the main goal is his business, not you.

Girls, I can tell you many more reasons why you should not date businessmen, but spending even more time on this record than I did is completely inefficient for me.

So… Draw your own conclusions from what I have already told you.

It was a story from the perspective of a man. Now I should probably say how it all looks from my, that is, the female, bell tower. About work - this is true almost 100%. It always works! I can't say that I'm married to a super trendy businessman, but he still works all the time because he loves his job. If he had a job first, and not me, then he might never have had me.

“When a businessman on a date gives you flowers and says nice things, he is working.”- and this is the pure truth! It always works. Jumping up in the middle of the night and running to the computer to write down your ideas or look for something is quite a common situation in our family.

He might be working on my birthday (like he did last time) or be on a business trip for our wedding anniversary. He may forget to buy a gift for me in advance and bring home something that he bought for himself, but then, it turns out, a holiday, and you need to somehow get out of the situation. Accordingly, I also buy gifts for his friends and relatives.

And in general, in my family there are not three incarnations (mother, friend and lover), like any other woman, but four - I am also a personal assistant, as I constantly remind about what needs to be done, with whom he has meetings and what he really wanted to say.

I can already read seminars or courses on the promotion of Internet projects and content policy, because all new ideas are tested on me. I play the role of a training audience in front of which new thoughts and ideas are expressed. He can call me when I went to the sea with my child, and for 20 minutes talk about what he learned new and what he came up with, and at the end of the conversation, say something like: “Oh, how cool! I talked to you while walking from the bank to the house. It's like you didn't go anywhere! Let me call you later, too, when I go to a meeting?! There are a couple interesting ideas, which needs to be edited before presenting to the client ... "

Finally, I would like to say that if you decide to marry a businessman, your main rival will not be any colleague, but work. Yes, she is born. And in order to always remain interesting for your husband, you will need to forget about rest and catch up with him, study, study, constantly study and never stop. You are now in the same harness and you need to look in one direction. This does not mean that now there is no “I”, but only “we”. But now your "I" should weigh much more than before.

It's a competition, baby, and if you relax, you'll be far behind. And it's very, very, very interesting. If you have common interests, you will never be bored. And yes, there will always be three of you - you, him and his work. But now this work will also be yours;)

The path of an entrepreneur is thorny and full of problems. Blows to self-esteem, distrust, the inability to spend money from the account of one's own company are a natural part of business life.

Your own boss, a free schedule, enough money and pride in your brainchild - this is how many imagine the life of an entrepreneur. larry kim, CEO Mobile Monkey and founder of WordStream refutes this myth. It turns out that along the way you will have to experience a feeling of humiliation and shame, constantly prove something to everyone around and tightly control your own daily routine and spending.

The American dream has changed beyond recognition. For a few more decades, it was a good house in the suburbs, an SUV and money to educate children in college. Today, many young people are happy to sacrifice even the house they inherited in order to become an entrepreneur, to develop own business and be your own boss.

Launching WordStream and running it successfully was a great experience for me, everything went great. But I encountered aspects of the entrepreneurial life that no one warned me about. Today I believe that before plunging into the world of business, you must be aware that it is not always warm and sunny in it.

Dropping out of college won't make you a Steve Job.

Many young people believe that if they could throw off their "suffocating shackles" higher education, then they would immediately create the next . Alas, the abandoned college does not guarantee this.

The truth is, they didn't drop out of school to eat chips and play computer games all day. Steve Jobs went to lectures for another year after his official expulsion. Gates, on the other hand, had been preparing for a year to open his own company before leaving Harvard.

These people are rare exceptions. You would probably be better off getting a good education before taking on a business. Just remember that Einstein was an excellent student and mastered advanced mathematics by the age of 15. He also didn't wear socks, but no one stops wearing them hoping to become a great scientist.

You must be insanely self-motivated

Just saying that you need to be motivated to be successful in business is an understatement. You have to be a person who asks 4, 6 times more from himself than those around him.

In addition, you need to be very curious, look for solutions to a variety of problems. Be prepared to be alone when you start. Yes, later a team of talented people may appear who will stand shoulder to shoulder with you, but the first stage must be completed alone. This means that you and only you will be a marketer, financier, customer service manager, etc. It is important to be prepared for this.

You won't be as rich as you think

When a business develops and reaches a certain level, it's a wonderful feeling. You see how the flow of money into the accounts increases, and at this moment there is a huge desire to start spending all this. Buying, of course, makes you a superhero in your own eyes, but it is important to keep the balance. You need to reward yourself for your efforts, but at the same time do not forget that you need to continue to “feed” the business. You need to develop the business at the expense of the money that it brings. The business is not yours. In order for a startup to turn into a reliable profitable business, pay yourself a minimum, otherwise nothing will come of it.

Delay is a death sentence

Postponing things for later becomes a habit for many at school or university. And although one sees that this leads to sleepless nights and constant anxiety, procrastination continues to bloom.

Once you become your own boss, there is no one else to punch you in the neck (teacher, professor, director). Now you yourself determine what you need to do in a day and what time you need to get up for this, where to work - at home, at a table in a coffee shop or rent an office. The lack of a clear structure, a clear understanding of the daily routine at the first stage of business life is very dangerous for a procrastinator (after all, you can watch one more episode of the series, and only then return to work). There is a risk of finding yourself in a situation where the clock is already one in the afternoon, and you order pizza for breakfast and go to brush your teeth in pajamas.

To prevent this from happening, it is important to immediately consider it as serious, which requires the preservation of working hours, only this will allow us to move forward.

Finding a dream team is hard

Your startup can be very interesting and promising, but it is often very difficult to explain and prove it to others. Don't be surprised if your friends, colleagues, and family members aren't overly interested in joining your cause.

You need to understand that you offer people to significantly change their lives, just by believing in you. We all have families and obligations, so take risks stable income few are ready. In order for people to come to you more confidently, you need to demonstrate the value of the company and its stability. As soon as you can prove to people that you are able to constantly pay them decent, there will be no problems with the team.

Pride can be seriously hurt

The harsh reality is that approximately 80% of startups fail. Worst of all, by the time of the crash, all your friends, acquaintances, and family members already know what you are doing and regularly ask how things are going. Imagine how fun it will be to meet everyone on the New Year or birthday?

It is important to accept the fact that failure is possible. It's just important not to lose your temper, but to learn from your mistakes. Many entrepreneurs go through several failed startups before they succeed. It takes a certain amount of humility to accept the fact that you were wrong, so you have to hide your ego deeper.

Success has never been so beautiful

The path of being an entrepreneur can be very difficult, but the rewards are enormous. You can read a lot about what businessmen have experienced when they have been successful, but you can't really understand it without experiencing it first hand.

The author of this text 10 years ago married an entrepreneur (the owner of a media company) and began to do what almost all Russian women do - to "make a nest" with all her might. But when Yana's husband said that all this was not important for him - because he could organize food, cleanliness in the house and even sex for himself, she was somewhat surprised. To the logical question, why did he then get married and what he expects from his wife, the husband answered at length - support. What is this mysterious support? What can a wife give to a man who leads big company and looks absolutely self-sufficient? Now Yana Agarunova, a happy wife and mother of five children, has the answers to these difficult questions, she devoted a whole book to them, called "My husband is an entrepreneur."

Being the wife of a pack leader is very attractive, but strong men also have a downside that not everyone sees - it’s not at all easy to live with them.

For example, they are very demanding of themselves and others. They can be tough not only at work, but also at home. Be ready to put up with the "costs" of the male line of behavior - rigidity, directness, lack of sentiment. It is unlikely that your husband will be brutal at work and romantic at home. You should not demand the impossible or take its rigidity personally.

It is especially important for such a man to be believed in him. Entrepreneurs are builders. Every time starting new project, risking money, investing time and effort, they do not know if this project will “shoot” or not. To become successful, a businessman needs to be strong, sometimes tough, not to show his weak sides. But no matter how self-confident a man may seem, he needs the support of a loving wife and the willingness of a woman to follow him.

The wife of an entrepreneur is in her own way like the wife of a Decembrist. You need to be ready for changes in life - moving to another city or country, budget cuts during a crisis, etc. Entrepreneurs, as a rule, are reliable husbands, and it is important for them that they can rely on their spouse 100%.

There is a common myth that being the wife of a businessman means living without worries. It is understood that the wife may not worry about anything materially. In reality, everything is not quite so.

The truth is that entrepreneurial life has long hours of "tornadoes" on a regular basis, and there is a high risk of failure and uncertainty about the future.
Yes, you may want to blame your spouse for getting the family involved in this, such as risking family money and so on. This is just something that absolutely cannot be done.

Think about it, you really shared with him the fruits that his business brought. Wealth, status, security, self-esteem and more. And in a crisis, it is time to share both the responsibility and the consequences of the destruction of the business.

What to do in a crisis

Keep your presence of mind, with words and deeds, show that you believe in your man. That this is a temporary situation, that he has not lost his talent, qualifications and can create new business projects and earn money. During a crisis, your man needs maximum support and faith in him. It's time to retrain as a coach and trainer. From a physical point of view, his sleep is vital. It will be impossible for him to fall asleep, because an endless stream of thoughts about what could have been done differently will interfere.

What is bothering your husband?

  1. Shame for failure in business
  2. Fear of seeing disappointment in the eyes of loved ones, and especially the wife
  3. disbelief in him
  4. Children's disbelief in him
  5. Unwillingness to share the consequences with him

How to help your husband?

  • Distract your husband physically from his experiences - you need to directly "knock" him out of this situation. It can be a massage, a walk, a movie, some new experience, meeting with friends. In a word, anything to distract him from these thoughts for a while.
  • Remind him that his most important resource is himself. And that this most important resource needs to be taken care of. My husband often says that one of his biggest regrets during his company's 1999 crisis was that he didn't take enough care of himself.
  • Together with your husband (and often for him), make a plan for his self-care.
  • Make a plan for a rainy day. Where, on what means you will live. If you do not have such a fund, start creating one today. Even during the heyday of a business, it is important to have such a plan.
  • Be aware of what is happening in the husband's company. In order for him to be willing to share this information with you, he needs to be sure that you will weather both the rise of the company and its fall. Share responsibility for the business with him.
  • One of essential elements support - to help him get out of the endless discussions and thoughts about what and where went wrong. This is the road to nowhere. However, every entrepreneur goes through this stage, the only thing that matters is how long it lasts.

Take action! Even if you make mistakes, the sooner they are made, the better! This way you will find your way faster. The desire to work on yourself and on relationships with a man will definitely be highly appreciated and will lead you to a long-term happy relationship.

How to help yourself

  • Create a support group for yourself. These can be relatives, friends, as well as wives of other entrepreneurs. I have three groups of businessmen's wives, we meet monthly, and these are the meetings where I get the most understanding and support. Being married to strong men, they face similar issues, and many of them have experience how to solve them.
  • Spend time with each other outside of family, kids, and business. Easily get involved in a new project or discussion existing business, it's easy to be parents talking about children, it's easy to discuss everyday and household issues, but at the same time you lose another important "thread" that connects you. Namely: to remain a man and a woman for each other.
  • Listen more than you talk. Ask questions, encourage your partner to share with you. This will build a relationship where the entrepreneur can openly discuss both the successes and failures of the business with you. Don't offer advice unless asked for it.
  • Have information about your husband's business. I know from my own experience how a business can drag on, regardless of size. Often in it you can get results faster from certain actions or changes than in relationships or in a family. An entrepreneur with his active lifestyle, exciting projects, business trips, meetings may not intentionally move away from his family. I do not call for interfering in daily business processes, this is inappropriate and can be annoying, nevertheless, it is important to know employees, come to the office from time to time, attend corporate holidays.
  • Learn to plan and budget. Your husband will be grateful if you record family income/expenses and if you do it in his language.
  • Love yourself. Being the wife of an entrepreneur requires a lot of resources and effort. This is a responsible job where you grow as a person, learn a lot and, like him, build. Build a family. Loneliness, fatigue, resentment are your enemies. It is important to take care of yourself and feel good, it is important to provide a high level of energy and good mood to be loved and the only woman in his life.
