What is a presentation handout. General requirements for the design of the test part

The graduate student is obliged to support the text of the report with illustrations from the work itself. You can do this in two ways:

  1. Print handouts and hand them out to members of the commission immediately before the start of the report. The handout is 5-7 sheets on which pictures, diagrams or tables are printed, which clearly illustrate the numbers or other information voiced in the report. Each table or figure in the handout must be signed. For example: Fig. 1 Dynamics of wages in 2007-2009 This is necessary in order to be able to refer to the handout in the report. The handout is printed in several copies so that there is enough for all members of the commission. However, if the commission is large, then 5 copies are enough. For aesthetics, you can title page handouts.
  2. If your university has a technical capability (namely, a multimedia projector), you can make a presentation using PowerPoint. MS PowerPoint is a program from the MS Office package (which also includes Word and Excel), designed specifically for creating graphic presentations. Presentations are used for visual presentation of information on a large screen with simultaneous commenting. When using a presentation, you will not need to print a handout. Members of the commission will be able to see all the illustrations on the screen using a multimedia device. At this time, you will flip through the slides and comment on them.

In most universities, graduate students can choose which of the options to give their preference. Of course, the quality of the thesis from the choice of the first or second option does not change. Using PowerPoint is considered more advanced, but I don't think it will significantly affect your score. In short, whether you will make a presentation or not is not so important.
If you decide to make a presentation in PowerPoint, see the description of this process below.

So, for starters, you must have MS Office installed. You can download it here. Install and run the program: Start - All Programs - Microsoft Office– Microsoft Office PowerPoint.
In contrast to the creation of handouts, it is advisable to include in the presentation not only illustrations, but also part of the report. Namely: it is good to make the first slide in the form of the title page of the thesis, then indicate the goal, objectives, object and subject of research, and only after that proceed to the description of the work itself.
There are two options for creating a presentation: make slides from scratch or use ready template. I recommend the second method as it will save you time. But here you need to take into account the possibility that one of your fellow students can use exactly the same template as you (the number of templates is limited). And then your presentations will look the same. To avoid this, you can search for a suitable template on the Internet, for example, on the Microsoft website. It is better to choose a light template so that black text is clearly visible on it. For example, I downloaded one .

The downloaded archive must be unpacked and opened by double-clicking the left mouse button. The template will open in PowerPoint. The PowerPoint window has standard view. On the left are slide thumbnails, and in the center is the current selected slide:

The next step is to make templates for the 2nd, 3rd and all following slides of your presentation. To do this, right-click on the first slide thumbnail, click Copy and paste a copy of it into empty place on the thumbnail panel:

Make enough templates and you can insert text and pictures into your presentation. To paste text into a slide, copy it from Word, then right-click on the slide and select the command Insert(or ctrl+ V on keyboard). Edit the pasted text using the standard MS Office toolbar:

The result should look like this:

The handout is prepared along with the presentation, after the thesis is completed in its entirety.

What does he represent? Handout - these are the materials that must be presented at the defense of the diploma attestation commission. It includes: drawings, graphs, drawings, tables, posters, diagrams.

Why is it needed? To make it clear to the attestation commission that you have disclosed your topic in its entirety, what studies have been conducted, and what results have been obtained.

General rules for the design of handouts for the thesis.

For handouts, white A4 sheets are suitable. Most often, the sheets are inserted into a folder with files, so that it is more convenient for the attestation commission to view the material, and the sheets do not fly apart and are not lost.

The total volume of the material should not exceed 10 pages. Each table (figure, drawing, etc.) with meanings and explanations should be on a separate sheet with a title.

There should not be a large amount of text in the proposals, since all material should be displayed in diagrams and very brief comments on them.

A copy of the handout is distributed to EVERY member of the attestation commission.

Each sheet should be numbered in ascending order.

Handout template.

  1. Title page. It is drawn up according to the following rules: the title of the topic, the full name of the author, the full name of the graduation supervisor are written.
  2. Introduction. Here are the main parameters of the introduction of the thesis. In size - the introduction should not take up more than half a page.
  3. First chapter. Consists of two sheets. This sheet indicates the goals of the study and objectives, the second sheet formulates the main terms that will be used in the presentation of the diploma.
  4. Second chapter. For the second chapter, graphic materials are needed, from which the attestation commission will be able to understand the analytical structure of your work. The illustrations here are usually taken from the thesis itself. Some verbal data can also be translated into tables and inserted into handouts.
  5. Third chapter. Here are the diagrams and tables that you have carried out scientific research from the practical part of your thesis. It is desirable that all the illustrations that you made in the diploma be displayed in the handout.
  6. Conclusion. In conclusion, conclusions from the research are presented. This material should take up no more than half a page of the entire work.

Important additions to the design of handouts.

If you use a computer presentation to defend your thesis, then your speech, slides from the presentation and sheets in the handout should go in parallel.

In the handout, you can make some notes or highlight words so that the certification committee understands what you should pay special attention to.

You can also use different colors and fonts here. But do not abuse it, as this is a thesis and teachers may simply not appreciate it.

Consult with your supervisor, maybe he will add something to the design of the handout, which we did not indicate here, but is an integral part of your educational institution.

The defense of the graduation project will largely depend on how beautifully and competently you present the material. In this sense, a presentation is not just work with slides, but also a report. Subject to its competent development, it will depend on how carefully you will be listened to, as well as the final grade.

So, it is important not only to be able to choose necessary information for the presentation, but also its qualitative presentation to the audience. And here are the general requirements for the design of presentations, the observance of which will help you get the coveted diploma.

Basic rules for presentation design: compose a speech

Students are usually given 10 minutes to present their thesis. You should not exceed this limit if you want to fully control the attention of your listeners.

The report should contain concise abstracts reflecting the main stages of the work performed. Try to follow the following sequence of actions:

  • greetings;
  • title of the topic of work;
  • description of the goals and objectives of the work;
  • the degree of development and relevance of the study;
  • description of the progress of work;
  • conclusions and results;
  • thanks to the listeners.

Before the presentation, the report must be rehearsed at home. Each person has a different timbre and speed of speech. To invest in the specified time, you need to independently dictate the work with a stopwatch.

When giving a presentation, try not to use little-known terms and be too smart phrases. Listeners can ask for clarification of their concept, and this takes additional time from the total time of the presentation.

And another tip: do not neglect such a procedure as pre-protection. This is your unique opportunity to rehearse your speech, preliminarily study the place where the defense will be held, and also cope with the upcoming excitement.

Basic requirements for presentation design: technical points

PowerPoint is a great tool designed to make the already difficult work of graduates preparing a presentation easier. With this program, you can easily do the following:

  1. Create slides and manipulate them.
  2. Insert text into slides.
  3. Provide greater clarity through the use of illustrations.
  4. For greater persuasiveness, use graphs, tables, formulas.
  5. Give a special mood with a rich choice of backgrounds.
  6. Manipulate text sizes, types, and colors.

However, this should not be overdone either. Too bright text will tire listeners. Do not forget - teachers listen to 10-15 presentations a day. And if each student focuses on the visual side of the defense, after the first student, the audience will lose interest in everyone else.

A few days before the proposed protection, adjust the automatic slide change. By setting the slide show time, you can fully rely on technology and not depend on the requests of colleagues who have to change images with each stroke of the pointer.

Each diagram, table, graph should have its own titles and serial numbers.

Design features of presentation handouts

If you plan to use important graphic information with a lot of data in your presentation, it is better to prepare a handout for the audience in advance. Members of the commission will be able to get to know your research more closely, with the data of tables, graphs, diagrams, without interrupting you during your speech.

Ideally, try to print out the entire presentation for the committee members so that the teachers can follow your thought without being distracted by the technical side.

Even if the printed version completely duplicates the information from the slides, this will help improve the perception of your report.

Not everyone has the proper ability and skills to use special presentation programs. And if you are sorely short of time to prepare it, it is best to seek help from experienced professionals who will help you in a short time

Many students choose visual and thoughtful multimedia presentations for their graduation projects or decide. At the same time, one should not forget about the handout for the study, which must be presented to each member of the certification committee. And this applies even to multimedia presentations. Handouts are not only an opportunity to visually demonstrate your work, but also an excellent insurance in case the multimedia presentation is under threat due to external circumstances.

The handout is compiled by the student and depends entirely on the content of the study, but there are requirements for its design. following certain rules will help to correctly present the work and produce good impression for a commission.

It is convenient to arrange graphs and tables in the form of a brochure; you can also combine the material into a folder. When writing, use the same font and size that is approved for the entire thesis. They are necessarily numbered, they should be placed in the sequence that is assumed by the performance. Note that the abstract to the study is also included in the list of materials. For those students preparing multimedia presentations, it is recommended to add small comments to each slide.

The title page for handouts is drawn up according to the same rules that exist for the title page of the diploma. The title is called as follows: "Handout for thesis on the topic...". They include all kinds of schemes, tables, illustrations, diagrams describing the research that was carried out in the work. An important requirement is compliance with volumes. So, all the material should fit on 15 sheets. standard format. If the specified volume is exceeded, then the information will become simply inconvenient for perception.

It is important that each member of the commission has enough folders or brochures with tables and graphs, otherwise a negative attitude towards the speech can be formed. It is better to make several additional copies in order to prepare for unexpected developments. For example, the appearance of one or more teachers at the defense of a diploma.

The handout helps to visually demonstrate the main theses of the work, to highlight the practical part of the study. To illustrate your work well, you need to take a responsible approach to compiling the material: choose the right information, correctly format it. Note that it is better to draw up graphs and diagrams together with the supervisor. A quality handout will help make a good impression on the committee and increase your chances of getting a good grade for your research.
