Just a short time ago, I had no idea about such a position as a “planning specialist.” And as soon as I started working in construction, I had the opportunity to encounter such a position and work closely with these specialists. Now such a position is found not only in construction, but also in other fields, and, I must say, is quite highly paid, and most importantly – interesting!

Of course, a planner is valued precisely in the area in which he understands. However, I believe that a competent specialist who knows the planning methodology can deal with any processes in a short period of time. Of course, there are a lot of specifics in construction, and a specialist with experience in a specific field will be more valuable.

So, what is a planner?

As far as I know, in the USSR there was a separate specialty that trained planning specialists, and a methodology for network planning and management was developed, which was used in the fields of industry and construction. Within the framework of the planned economy of the state, he was a serious and respected person))

IN modern economy All construction management was assigned to the project manager. At the same time, sometimes forgetting that the manager’s task is not only to solve operational problems of the project, planning and relationships with contractors, but also to motivate and manage the project team. But they came up with a lot of related departments that can do financial models, calculate investments, plan sales, but all paths still lead to the project manager, who is an expert in all project processes and is aware of everyone, everything and everyone))

There are also estimators who will help evaluate future work. And sometimes even specialists cannot take into account everything, also in conjunction with related departments. In general, the planner is the aggregator of the entire working group project.

— Over time, he orients himself in the field of activity and in technological processes that the company deals with. For example, if it is a development company, he needs to understand the overall process of constructing a project, starting from the purchase and registration of land, ending with the transfer of the facility into operation and registration of ownership rights.

— Can independently draw up a budget and project schedule using any tool. The planner is the hands of the project manager. Work in different information systems takes a lot of time, but the RP himself often has no time to enter information there. But a simple computer operator is not suitable here; a person must understand where and why this information came from, that is, he must also be the brain of the project manager))

- Can analyze budget and schedule, highlighting critical tasks and potential budget overruns.

— Understands which related company processes influence planning processes and can take this into account when planning. For example, the impact of contractual relations on the project budget.

— Promptly notifies the project manager of emerging or predicted schedule and budget deviations.

— Keeps the project budget and schedule up to date. Work on the project goes on every day, at least every week the status of the work is clarified, and project financing is supported. An up-to-date schedule and budget always provide insight into the status of the project. Able to promptly answer questions about the current status of project work, planned and actual expenses.
